Has he been linked with any teams?

Would one of the better transfers that would make personal or national sense as most riders who are nearing retirement return to a team closest to their national origin. Then to top it off would be a nice F-U to Johnny V. :p

Stannard has been linked to OPQS. Obviously he's no Chavanel replacement but he would improve the depth. Having said that they're not exactly short of guys for the cobbles: Trentin, Kwiatkowski, Steegmans, Vandenbergh, Keisse, Maes etc.

Probably it only means he is invested on becoming World Champion, which is very very unlikely.

I think Costa could become WC- he is more suited to the course than Cancellara- but maybe not as many options. However he has been very strong this year and likes these races.

Van Keirsbulck too.

good, also for maybe having prospect of having lampre do the volta portugal again and maybe rui costa wanting to win it. maybe will add 1 more portugese rider?

RAI saying Rui Costa is very close to Lampre.

I would be surprised if they could outbid Astana and BMC but reports were saying Costa would be given full leadership at Lampre so maybe that is making the difference.

At BMC he would probably still need to fight it out with TJVG. And at Astana Nibali is obviously number 1. Seems like Costa really is being ambitious.

There are a lot of portuguese riders with WT experience that still don't have a contract for next year so that could certainly be a possibility.

This would be huge. Lampre needs a young GC leader to replace Scarponi and Cunego, and Costa is an awesome talent. If Movistar hadn't wasted him futilely trying to bring Valverde back to the peloton on stage 13, he might have finished in the top 10 (he was 9th, just behind Quintana, at the time).

Movistar update:

15 riders so far have contracts for 2014. The seven recently announced extensions (Herrada brothers, Rojas, Lastras, Intxausti, Visconti, Plaza) plus eight who already have existing contracts (Valverde, Nairo Quintana, Amador, Castroviejo, Dowsett, Ospina, Capecchi and Szmyd).

Renewals are pending for seven riders: Erviti, Gutiérrez, Karpets, Moreno, Sanz, Teruel and Ventoso.

Unzue says ''Cobo is leaving, either Costa or Madrazo are leaving as well''. He expects to sign five or six new riders. Malori and Dayer Quintana pretty much confirmed. Izaguirre brothers are rumoured to be joining.

The other news is that a new three year deal with Movistar to 2016 should be announced during the Vuelta.

Lampre don't have many riders under contract for 2014 so I think they have some budget to play with. A good move for him I think. I'm also pleased to see talent spread amongst teams. We don't want all of the top riders to be at just 4 or 5 teams.

lampre actually have quite a lot of money. their boss is rich and he's a cycling nut.

For all their riders of dwindling ability who will be 32 and up next season (Cunego, Scarponi, Niemiec, Serpa, Pozzato), they have some young guns to be stoked about in Ulissi, Anacona, and Favili. A star GC name under the age of 30 to lead the squad could be a big piece in a rejuvenation for Lampre.

He already said that he was feeling tired and didn't recuperate very well the day before (a flat stage btw).

He's nota GC rider. His best GT gc is 18th ffs. He couldn't do it last year when there was no leaders in his team and he was on the same level as this year.

He's a great rider, top 20 in the world and big transfer for Lampre but no GC leader. He can win classics, week-stage races and stages in GT's. If he focuses on the Tour next year he'll probably finish 9th or 10th. He'd be better off losing some time winning two stages and getting 18th in gc
