He is from Zuya, near Simferopol in Crimea, where the vast majority of the population voted for re-integration into Russia. He may of course be of minority opinion in that area, but he is far more likely to be of the majority opinion.

Well if you read what he has said, it's clearly not a pro russian stance.

It's funny to see that while everyone pleads for the internationalisation of cycling a lot of people cheer whenever teams or cyclists of their country are concerned

Since the start of the race, Grivko has been in touch with his family. He explained that his sister and others have been asked to accept Russian passports but refused.

“I live with this situation with a lot of anger because I have the impression that they want to expel us from our home,” he added.

“The Russian dictatorship is installing themselves while I am cycling on the roads of the Tour de France.”

It's supposed to become a kind of Dutch version of Topsport Vlaanderen... which is not a bad initiative, I guess. Somehow Boogerd still manages to position himself as the hero of Dutch cycling, and a sponsor fell for it.

Not every great manager was a superb cyclist. Maybe his skillset as a manager is above his riding skills? Only time will tell. I hate these prejudices before someone had the chance to show what he can do.

Well, once the team was announced and it's almost a national team, everyone in the Netherlands cries victory....

It seems in times of internationalisation everyone is turning homewards instead of turning his attention to the other countries

To further inform you, the Crimean election was a sham. It's still unknown whether the votes really were counted since the election observers were a whos who of Europes far right. Also the Russians blocked all Ukrainian TV stations.

So whether Grivko is in a minority is also yet to be determined.

Problem is that there isn't going to be competition for the WT spots. As far as I understand, only the Alonso team (of non-WT teams) is interested in getting a WT status. Cannondale will merger with Garmin, so the spot is open.

The only other team I think might want WT status would be Cofidis, but I really, really doubt that.

I know it is linked to Grivko, but please no politics in the Pro Cycling part of this forum.
