RE Danes having trouble moving up from U23:
The way I understood it a part of the problem was that earlier they were basically just sent "out in the wild" all on their own. This resulted in situations in which they suddenly found themselves all alone far away from home somewhere in Southern Europe with - in some cases - literally nobody they could talk to.
However, one of the thinks Bennekou have been working with is maintaining the contact with the newly-turned-pro riders, and I assume Lund will be continuing that work.
Another thing there have been focus on is advising the riders when it'll be a good idea to get a pro contract, and not to go pro too early, to give a couple of recent examples:
Guldhammer:
Let's face it, it was too early for him to go pro back when he (first) did. (This might have been before Bennekou started). His "new start" with CULT have been doing pretty well.
Lander:
If I recall correctly Bennekou mentioned that he advised him against signing with BMC back when he did. He had to return home and is now he's about to start his "second attempt" at turning pro, with a smaller team.
Cort:
Was offered a contract with Garmin for 2014, decided to wait and has had a decent first season with Orica.
Würtz Schmidt:
Had plenty of offers after his World Championships win, is staying home until he's ready to turn pro.
S. Kragh:
Will actually have Bennekou as a DS on Giant next year, so he's covered.
So even if Danish riders in the past might have had a "higher fail rate", hopefully in the future they won't chew over more than they can bite and turn pro too early.
However, it might not so much be to Danish riders who have a higher fail rate, but more the Danish fans who have a higher hype rate.
