Roelandts to Movistar official

Seems like an odd signing for Movistar, unless there are more cobbles specialists to come.

Probably will get his chances during the spring, then fill the same role as Bennati I would think

They needed that type of rider in the squad also, since they lost a few of those riders during the last year or so

Maybe Valverde is actually going to race Flanders and/or a couple of the cobbled races that he keeps saying he's going to race? If so then he'll have some real help. Otherwise Roelandts will be able to race the cobbled races for himself. I would also expect he would be a great help to Valverde at Strade Bianche.

I don't think he is particularly well suited to Strade Bianche but I like your Valverde/Flemish Classics idea. I think he'll finally go there next year.

But I have thought so for the last couple of years too...

Laurens Ten Dam to CCC apparently. Another important mountain domestique for Dumoulin leaving the team.

If they dont get in two good replacements for him and Geschke it is looking pretty weak...

But if Oomen and Kelderman riding as doms for Dumo next year and with no own ambitions it is still okay I guess. Kragh Andersen is strong too.

It leaves the squad as a whole pretty weak tho if they not signing anyone. Any rumors on who they might be signing?
Replacing LTD and Geschke as riders won’t be so hard; steady, medium mountain all-rounders aren’t thin on the ground. What they need is 2 or 3 guys who can take a 3km pull up a 10% grade in the last 10km on the 4th or 5th mountain of a 200km stage.

Replacing LTD AND Geschke in terms of personality, loyalty, honesty of work, and sheer beardiness will be a different matter.

Geschke was among the last 10-15 riders on L´Alpe D Huez...basically the last non Sky helper to be dropped. Not sure if it is as easy as you think to replace him. He isn´t as good of a puncheur anymore but climbing wise he was never better.
I agree that Ten Dam needs to be replaced...his decline is obvious and a younger rider should take his place.

They will probably sign someone like Roche to replace Geschke. As noted above, there are a few good quality guys around who can cover that job. The problem is that there are not many guys around who can be a climbing super domestique of the sort Dumoulin has continually lacked.

Movistar as a whole don't have many riders suited to Strade Bianche.

I really hope Valverde does go to Flanders next year. He keeps saying he wants to (and I do believe he does want to) and then not going. Maybe now with Roelandts there he'll finally go.

They're getting stretched really thin thoug. Obviously the Tour squad didn't have Oomen or Kelderman, which would be a massive improvement either way, and if you add Matthews you basically have the high mountains covered. But it's really thin for an entire calendar

Wouldn't rule out Deignan either, he'd be a key domestique on most WT teams.

Apparently it's UAE or Sky for the Izagirre brothers.
Izagirre bros at Sky would be crazy. Look at what they did with Castroviejo and then imagine how good the Izagirres would be.
Castroviejo hasn't performed differently from his last years at Movistar. But Izagirres would be crazy. Ion is at a completely different level compared to Castro. He won't have anything close to the freedom his ability deserves if he goes to Sky. I guess it depends on how much he values a fat pay check.

Oh yes he did! Especially in the mountains

I doubt Movistar are especially aiming for the cobbled classics but maybe Jasha and Oliveira with Roelandts are enough for the team to get a bit more prominence in some of the semi-classics, or get a reason to get the team invites to a few more Benelux races so they won't be as out of their depth in those kind of stages in future. Or, it may suggest that Dzmitry Zhygunou is in the driving seat for promotion from Lizarte seeing as they do need somebody to do the fast finishing placements role, seeing as Rojas is no longer fulfilling that kind of position and Barbero doesn't seem durable enough in terms of the fight for position to do it on the WT races outside of Spain, though Martí Márquez and António Soto are also potential promotions (though Soto is more in the same kind of position as Pedrero was a couple of years ago, if they don't promote him now, he may as well jump to Burgos or Portugal if he wants to ride pro). For his part, Roelandts will be a comfortable leader at those races, he'll have the chance to sprint for his own results (admittedly with no support) most places he wants to, certain leadership for all Benelux races outside of Ardennes week, and he'll probably get to ride the Tour to do the same pilotfish role that Bennati has had recently.

Yeah, like promising cobbled specialist Valverde :D

  Sure why not. He's going to start his new career as a cobbled classic specialist at 39 years old. Although who knows. He did say this year he actually enjoys the cobbled races and would like to race more of them. Maybe just send him to all the classics except Paris-Roubiax and now he's got a great help with Roelandts.

Nothing from Team Sky yet. They usually announce a group by now. Is the Thomas contract holding it all up for them? Or are they retaining nearly all of 2018's squad?

I'd expect Intxausti, Lopez, Deignan and one of Dibben/Doull to leave this year.

No strong links on who would arrive except Ganna.

Is there any truth to the Pozzato to CCC rumor?

I know he wants to continue another year at the top level
