I wonder what happened to this kid.

He broke his left pelvis during last years Vuelta. Never really recovered from that according to some news reports. The termination was - apparently - mutual.

Everyone has seen Donovan's results, but I think Ethan Hayter is the really interesting one to watch over the next few years. He's as impressive a young trackie as they've had in recent years, and he's been getting road results too.

The Dane is delighted with his move to the Dutch WorldTour squad. “I’m very pleased to have signed a contract with Team LottoNL-Jumbo, which is a big dream coming true. I am really looking forward continuing my development at a professional cycling team like this. Team LottoNL-Jumbo is the right choice for me in the way they are focusing on the process and not only on the results. I hope that I can contribute to the teams’ future success. According to the current sports director of Vingegaard, Christian Andersen, Team LottoNL-Jumbo is the logical next step for his pupil. “This team reflects the core values of ColoQuick and the way we work with young talents. Are all Verandas riders contracts being honored? What’s happening to their staff? Can Aquablue actually hold Van Aert to a contract signed with Verandas / Sniper if the combined racing entity is Aquablue not Sniper (only relevant if he wants to leave).

As announcements go, it’s pretty left field. I suppose it makes sense for a bike and gear retailer to want to move into cross. It will also presumably get them into every classic they want. I’m not sure that it will particularly help them get GT or other stage race invites, but I’m now suddenly interested in hearing who these other “high profile riders” are.

You just have to read their press release and notice there isn't a single word coming from the one which is still the main concerned, i.e. Van Aert, to wonder if Van Aert is happy about that (and even more: whether he has known about that before today ).

Van Art probably has been in talks with LottoNL and the Verandas Willems management about a transfer fee to ride for Jumbo in 2019 and now has to deal with someone else after his summer vacation!

It strikes me as pretty unlikely that Van Aert is overjoyed by this turn of events, but we will see what he makes of it soon enough. Presumably his contract was Verandas/Sniper’s most valuable asset. It’s not immediately clear to me that it’s enforceable unless ABS are going to race under Sniper’s old license, but I freely admit to not having a very firm grasp of the technicalities involved. It’s certainly possible that there’s going to be a legal dispute if Van Aert doesn’t want to play along.

I’m curious about how much of a pivot to cyclocross the team are planning. And of course, while Van Aert will be fine no matter what, I suspect that other Verandas employees may have reason to be concerned.
