The reason is to keep the gaps smaller and have more contenders to the title. Cycling has changed in the last 20 years. It is not my decision. I agree with some of that and disagree with other things that they have done. But it is what it is. I certainly want to see better mountain stages but at the same time I don't want to see Indurain type rider killing the spectacle so early in the race. With the marketing, social media, and commerciality that cycling has today that is a big No-No.

Now you can disagree with the organizations or not, that is not my problem. As I told you, it is what it is. You would be barking at the wrong tree.

You are not consistent. You only want to keep "the gaps" smaller by making the time trials shorter (which has already happened). But not by making the mountain rides lighter. This is how you disadvantage the all-rounders and you favor the climbers. Of course, you are not responsible for the course. But you seem to agree with the current circumstances.

A "Indurain type rider killing the spectacle" had very little to do with the course, but with Indurains allround qualities.... and the fuel he used.

Well, my idea rather was:

Today shows the climbing level Pogacar has reached over the winter. Should he be dominant today, then I fear Primoz again won‘t have any chance in the Tour…
Agree.
Roglic is also getting older. I think he will have to recognize his superior on heavy and long climbs. Which does not alter the fact that Roglic can still beat Pogacar on an uphill finish. When riding defensively uphill, and then Roglic can show his explosiveness for the last kilometer

Will this be a first breakway ever to win a stage in UAE Tour? I can't ever remember that happening.

IMHO for what we know it's the opposite, if Roglic waits for the sprint he'll loose, we've already seen that Pogacar is faster both in flat and uphill sprints but Roglic managed to beat him in Itzulia by attacking from afar and Pogacar didn't look really dominant on big long climbs and on some occasions has even been dropped (think for example of Ventoux or Loze). Obviously if Roglic level has fallen or Pogacar has upped his game compared to 2020 and 2021 there is no battle but i won't take it as a certainty, Roglic is stil young cycling career wise and Pogacar could already be at his maximum level being an early bloomer.

So the climb begins in 5 km, which team will make the pace? I think UAE, Ineos and Bora will have an interest for a high pace at the climb. Jumbo not so much. They will be fine with a moderate tempo..

Why? Wouldn't a steady tough pace be better for Dumoulin than a slow tempo and a hard sprint at the end?
Well with a high pace there will be bigger differences in the end. Dumoulin has an advantage right now, so he doesn´t have an interest in high differences..
