It looked like Merlier on the live feed but the photo finish was impossible to tell. I think this may be a rare case of a tie being the most reasonable result.

Almeida has regressed as a TT'er since joining. He was also a good rouleur, but seems to have lost some of that as well. With guys like Bjerg, Laengen there, they should definitely have been able to get their GC riders in the first group. I don't think it's down to (dis)ability, just being tactically inept, clueless. Or indifference, i don't know.
Bjerg can be good in crosswinds, but he's also not exactly the kind of guy that I'd call an expert there, despite his engine. The funny thing with Laengen is that despite his size and big engine he has probably shown more ability on hilly terrain and even as a climbing domestique than as a guy for hectic flat stages.
So far they have also not managed to develop Rui Oliveira into that kind of rider.

So Remco strikes his rivals on the first day already. 50 seconds is a lot but Yates won't give up without trying some strong attacks in the mountains.

here's the photo finish RCS sent out in their press release. Still not very clear, but Merlier seems to be one pixel in front

Congratulations to Tim Merlier for taking the stage. Although i feel that today a wrong call was made. On how to deal with the situation. Today sport didn't win.

As for the stage. Sand, heat, wind and wide roads. Rather exciting. UAE lost big today. In terms of GC. Considering tomorrow is TTT. Could be GC has already been decided. Personally i hope UAE will at least try. To change the outcome. We'll see.

It's just to even things out to when Warlop took the place of a rider on the World Tour team.

Why would you drop Vernon to the development when prior to Rwanda he had 2 race days for a first and a second - It's not as though he is out of form orcoming back from injury.

Actually they looks like they are both 1 pixel from the line. I guess they jsut decided to give the win to Merlier.

Didn't you ask the very same question yesterday?

normally they have very precise data. The photo finish from Croatia last year for example included the time gaps , according to which one rider finished 0.0004s ahead of the other:

So I don't think it's decided based on that photo, but on more information.
