Actually, I think that he had more prep when he was racing 4-5 years ago.
Indeed! I mean he raced more MTB and more Cx back then. He was really into it, and at that juncture, when you are only away for a few months or so, so can come back really quickly because you don't lose that feel. But once you are away for like a year or more, then race a few times and then are away for a big chunk of time, you lose that feel for that type of bike, at race pace, on WC type courses.

Hopefully he sticks with it this year so he can get those skills refined again.

Yeah, true, I just meant that he was less MTB focused compared with the rest of the field. In any event I still think he can win a World Cup event but it's not going to be like CX...

Since hIs last XCO win in August 2019, he's done just 6 XCO races. Is it any wonder he's not dialled in on the MTB?? And he's had crashes on the first lap in 3 of those races......

Considering the MTB Worlds is his main focus, why is he doing both the Dauphin & Tour??? It doesn't make sense, and you feel his team aren't really helping him. He could be training, racing on the MTB to get the right feelings back.

I like that MvP has struggled. Not because I want to see him do poorly, I don't because I like the kid, but because its a good message to those who think this dirt thing is easy. I have no doubt that if MvP wants to do well on the dirt he can, but it will take work and focus.
Still relevant all this time later..........

broken wrist... but team says TdF not yet in danger... smh, then just don't make the XCO WCH on of your season's main goals ffs.

must be long time ago... before his road racing shenanigans i'd guess - he was forced to abandon RR and return to mtb because of the knee pain on the road bike... he's also fighting allergies every year and some back problems from time to time. 2 second places in 2021 (one of them in Leogang). he was always a good climber but struggled on the descents and his starts were always really bad... this time everything was perfect for him, Specialized guys had a bad day, etc... great result for him and confidence bump for sure. also another great race for Puntener...
