UCI Points system

Lappartient and the rest of the oh so self righteous and comfortable UCI should be VERY careful when imposing their WorldTour points system.

I note that he highlights the NBA, in his Cycling news piece, I would like to point out that the NBA has absolutely NO connection to another of these Faux sports Governments FIBA and is financially far stronger than the FIBA OR cycling.

In Drag Racing the FIA rule with crass stupidity, electing people with no real financial acumen where else could a Swedish train worker become the European President of a sporting commission!

The worlds largest and financially strongest most powerful Drag Racing organiser is the NHRA (National HotRod Association) and they told. The FIA to FO in no uncertain terms decades ago, when they came sniffing thinking they could get cash from all those NHRA Licence holders and teams.

What is interesting that Americans now own F1 and if the FIA keep interfereing they WILL without doubt tell them that they are no longer welcome, event gates are falling with no sign of recovering, the fact is racegoers want V10 V12 motors back but that is not what governments and manufacturers want, so I fully expect to see an FIA free F1 series within ten years with a single motor option Awarded every few years which may well mean Ferrari pull out.

The UCI speak in a grandiose manner but impose stupid sanctions like this point system because Football does it! that damages a sport a hundred years old yes, but only just beginning to grow substantially, Not the best way to encourage entrepreneurs such as Israel-Premier Tech team owner Sylvan Adams The only compensation he will get is rules are rules even if the rules are wrong.

So why does cycling allow the UCI to play at being in charge?

The fact is ASO hold the sole rights to the worlds biggest most popular cycle races With the Tour de France, the worlds largest annual sporting event, le Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, the Vuelta, The Paris-Nice and Critérium du Dauphiné stage races’, prestigious classics such as Paris-Roubaix (Men and Women), Liège-Bastogne-Liège (Men and Women), The Flèche Wallonne (Men and Women) and Paris-Tours and Ceratizit Challenge by La Vuelta (Women). And are activley Promoting cycling around the world (NOT THE UCI) is a key plank of its development strategy. Through the Tour of Qatar, the Tour of Oman, Saudi Tour, Arctic Race of Norway, Deutschland Deine Tour, Eschborn–Frankfurt and Tour de France Criteriums in Saitama and Singapour, A.S.O. is an active contributor to the development of cycling worldwide. The UCI takes MONEY without giving back!

So rather than complaining about how the UCI is planning to make cycling more like other sports why not just give them notice?

The UCI do nothing that a good event owner does not do already far more efficiently maybe they could remain for some safety regs but otherwise who needs em!

I speak as someone who has worked with some of these faux governments and they ALL speak the same language they ALL have the same aims SELF SELF SELF.

The ASO is part of the problem because they own the equivalent of the Super Bowl and the tv streaming rights for that are so valuable (setting aside the requirement that some events be broadcast for free in certain some countries)..

Until broadcast rights are bundled together in a way that all parties accept (and hate), the system will be unbalanced.

The ASO owns a checkmate over the UCI.

Who compares drag racing to an Olympic sport, it is hard to take this post seriously once you use that analogy?

Some of the Olympic sports have really strong umbrella organizations that do an impressive job moving their sports forward and managing safety. The safety side of UCI does not have a great track record - perhaps, there are a number of folks that need to be transitioned out of the system to improve this.

You really do not understand how rights work.

The reality is that ASO has exclusive control over the largest and most prestigious cycling competitions in the planet. The world's largest annual sporting event, the Tour de France, the women-only le Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, the Vuelta, the Paris-Nice and Critérium du Dauphiné stage races, the men's and women's Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, The Flèche Wallonne, and Paris-Tours, and the Ceratizit Challenge by La Vuelta (Women). are actively engaged in A major tenet of its growth strategy is the promotion of cycling globally (NOT THE UCI). A.S.O. is actively contributing to the international growth of cycling via the Tour of Qatar, the Tour of Oman, the Saudi Tour, the Arctic Race of Norway, Deutschland Deine Tour, Eschborn-Frankfurt, and the Tour de France Criteriums in Saitama and Singapour. I'm guessing that the money made from TV rights, isn't anything spectacular......and probably peanuts compared to the major global sports. I recall a podcast on Cycling Tips 2-3 years ago where they mentioned this.
A lot of sports, are run for the governing body by a Promoter, who decide everything, from the calendar to TV rights, etc
So for cycling, the UCI World Tour would be run by ONE body, and races wanting to be included would pay a hosting fee to the Promoter, not the UCI for inclusion. However, how can this work in cycling with ASO, RCS, Flanders Classics, etc they'd all lose some control.

TV rights can't be that much. GCN seems to own almost every race in most regions globally and it is a tiny startup that makes short films about dipshits riding bikes

I mean, you're not wrong, just look at the absurd fees that the UCI is charging for the right to host a WC...

Speaking of the points system, for me it's mainly a problem in one day races. Teams will try to put as many riders in the top 15 instead of trying to win races (like the Italian PCT teams when the Coppa Italia win still gave you a Giro wildcard), that is against basic racing tactics and ruins the spirit of one day racing. If only the best placed rider of a team would score points it would solve that problem.

Overall the whole WT system has mainly benefitted the UCI, who can charge more money for a WT license than for a PCT license, not to mention the financial benefits of giving more races WT-status. While races like the Giro and the Vuelta got more international teams and big names on their start list it, the restriction of wildcard and not being sure of getting one also ruined the once strong PCT/2nd tier teams that those countries had (remember when Androni had guys like Scarponi and Rujano, actually up there with the best in the high mountains and fighting for top 5 or even podium spots on the gc?).

Well said platereliable that is spot on!

The main changes to the points scale attributed by the different race classes in the UCI International Road Calendar are as follows:
  • increase in the number of points attributed by the three Grand Tours – the Tour de France, the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta Ciclista a España (final general classification, stage and secondary classifications);
  • creation of a special category for the five Monuments (Milano-Sanremo, Ronde van Vlaanderen, Paris-Roubaix, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Il Lombardia) with a greater number of points attributed to them compared with the other one-day races on the UCI WorldTour;
  • increase in the number of points attributed during stages of races of the UCI WorldTour and of the UCI ProSeries; in future, points will be awarded for finishes lower than third place (all the way down to fifth, tenth or 15th, depending on the competition);
  • increase in the number of points distributed during the Olympic Games and the UCI Road World Championships (road races and time trials in the Elite categories).

These changes, which will serve to widen the gap between the points scored in the most prestigious races and those in lower categories, are aimed at encouraging teams to enter their best riders in the most important races and to ensure a better correlation between the points awarded and the sporting achievement involved, which is clearly at a higher level in UCI WorldTour races featuring all UCI WorldTeams.

If they are going to change it, isn't now the very best time to do so? At the end of one cycle and the beginning of another.?

Well technically the new cycle hasn't started already (there's races going on).
And no teams have done their transfers and made their plans on how to score points based on the previous system, you cant just change now... Obviously they should've announced these changes months ago already, but if that wasn't possible they should just implement them in 2024, even tho that's mid cycle. Atleast teams can prepare for a new season knowing the rules then.

It's good that the UCI have tweaked the points system to reflect the difficulty and prestige of certain races. However promotion/relegation from current teams should be based only on WT races, while the Pro Conti teams count points from dot pro, 1.1 and 2.1 races.

Yeah, right. That seems so fair toward teams who aren't automatically invited to all WT races.

Those WT points wouldn't count in the suggested scenario.

I'm reading irony into your post.

No - Because you are grouping teams according to their categories - Current WT teams accrue points in WT races only for purposes of promotion/relegation as all WT teams receive - Pro-Conti teams are competing against other pro-conti teams in .pro, 1.1 and 2.1 races for promotion to the WT - Bottom two in the WT are relegated and top two pro teams are promoted - Of course all teams must also meet financial and ethics standard.

It would be stupid because it would then make sense for ProTeam to not send their best riders to the big WT-races they are invited to and instead focus on small 1.1 races.

Example: this year, Van Der Poels Ronde win or all the GT-stages they won would with your suggested system give 0 points for Alpecin in the battle for promotion. I can’t understand why anyone would think this is good.

This kind of system would only make sense if divisions were separate and no ProTeam could ever participate in WT-races.

I get the point, now, I didn't realise you were talking about a scenario where there was certain to be two teams relegated and two promoted.

I think I like that idea much less than what we have now.

The WT Teams and the Pro teams are in effect in separate pools for the COUNTING of UCI points for promotion/relegation - WT teams will still ride .pro. 1.1 and 2.1 and Pro teams will still ride WT races when they receive invitations.
