I think the result for Astana in the giro was good today. Fortunato and Ulissi dropped enough time to be allowed to go on a break in the upcoming weeks, as they will have around 7 or 8 minutes gap after the ITT. This meens fortunato can still fight for the KOM and both of them for stage wins. Nevertheless they should at least finish top 25 in GC (which gives 50 points), compared to ~ 180 points for place 10/11, which is exactly the amount for a stage win or the KOM win. Additionally, such a break could result in even moving back to around 10th place in GC, which I think would have been the optimum even if they weren't positioned to far back in front of the first gravel sector today and would not have drop (much) time. The only negative thing for them today is that poels dropped so far back, but even if he gets 40th instead of 20th in gc that will cost only around 30 points.

For PicNic its hard to say. Poole could now be allowed to go in breaks as well, dependent on his ITT. There he could score more as riding for something like 9th in the bunch all the time (which he could get as well with riding back to the gc in a break)

I am using Picnic as the hypothetical example. Say they finish 19th in the three year standing. They obviously miss out on a WT licence BUT if 2025 continues to be bad then they will miss out out on WT wildcards in 2026 if they do not finish in the top 21 for this years results. But if at the end of the year a WT team folds etc, etc, etc , then Picnic get the WT licence as the 19th team in the standings. That is the flaw in the system.

The PCT teams will still ride selected WT races and definitely GT's. It's just that their points in WT races will not count against their competing PCT teams. The reason is that you will never get parity with PCT teams being invited to the same number of WT events.
Surely that would hurt the PCT teams chances of moving up to WT if they send teams to WT races but have no chance to gain points, rival teams for promotion are out at lower ranked races scoring while they are at a 3 week race with a full team and no chance at points. That’s hardly fair

The PCT teams have enough riders to run two programs at once. They will not knock back the opportunity to ride a GT.

for the first time this year the UCI ranking show Astana move up to 18th place, while Picnic drop down to the 19th place , that leads to relegation.

As noted above they are in 18th place...the gap is zero

I assume Astana will keep climbing, and if they make it to 17th or higher the graph will continue above zero and into positive numbers.
But it's still the 18th best of other teams that is the relevant benchmark. Being 17th with 300 points to 18th is not very informative if 19th is 1200 points behind them. The outcome that matters is relegation or not, and their buffer in that regard is now over 100 points.

i don't understand the picnic team. they are keeping "business as usual" attitude , instead of sign to every possible damn race, like Astana did this year, or send many riders to every break and every sprint, and start bring some points. it looks like they gave up already.

Astana's Chinese sponsorship deal is (rumored to be) valid for the WT only. Maybe this is not the case for Picnic ;).

But yeah, for them the situation actually looks even worse, because who would hand out wildcards to a faceless team like them?!

Van Uden has scored 310 points for PicNic this Giro. Bit surprising that he is the one saving them for now. Getting closer to Cofidis (Astana isn't relevant).µ

This Giro is also hurting Intermarché badly. Thijssen simply does not have it. He barely scores any points and they have only one decent climber that could maybe get a minor results from a break. Apart from that they only have Bussato who could surprise somewhere maybe.

Still a 1900 points gap for them, but it's going to be reduce the upcoming 2 weeks. Some pressure on their guys going to Mayenne and Norway next week.

Thijssen is having a horrible season.

The team will ultimately rely on Girmay. If he manages to get a decent amount of points at TdF then we're safe. Other than that it will be tough to survive.

before the season, Thijssen said that he lost quite a bit of weight to be able to contest harder sprints as well - but he's yet to prove that, and as a consequence also seems to have lost all speed.
2024 was also a bad year. After the crash in Scheldeprijs and the top sprinter emerge of Bini in the Tour (Thijssen wanted to sprint for own results in some stages) Gerben is nowhere to be seen. Even ample top 5 results in Belgian classics/1.1's. This Giro was his last chance as a nr. 1 sprinter imo. His DS was very positive at the start. Still has a contract for 2026/2027 but should seriously reconsider his profile.

What is the meaning of the two "Total Gaps."

That graph took some effort for sure.
i basically summed all the gaps every team (i used the relevant 8 teams) had for promotion in each week. as you can see in the beginning the sum is very big, and lately the gaps are getting smaller and smaller, so the competition is getting more and more tight.
