Just having a look at the final riders announced by Australia and I see Australia are only starting 4 in the U23 men RR (from potentialy the 6 they could).

Matthews was always going to be in the team (Oceania RR Champ) so Australia could select 5 others, the Cycling Australia web site now only shows 4 starters for the RR (updated 24th).

As the World Champs are in Austraia this would appear to be dumb in my opinion, it is not like Austraia does not have the talented U23 riders to fill the spots and give the Australian fans more to cheer on.

Don't understand it.

Interesting comments from Evans at yesterdays training camp in canberra
"We haven't had that meeting yet," Evans told AAP. "I hope at least to get the role of a protected rider."

"It's a question of whether there's three guys left in front or whether there'll be 40 guys left in front," Evans said. "I don't know what's going to happen, but nobody does, so everyone's in the same boat."

Roe had to pull out last week or so, not sure why they only have 4 starters though...

AFL grand final drawn - replay next Saturday. The sports coverage will be dominated by coverage of it and the world champs are going to be totally overshadowed.

After the AFL draw today I think I will see what odds can I get on a Kolobnev / Pozzato dead heat. With both the AFL GF replay and NRL grand finals on the same weekend, the World Champs will get very little publicity. I hope no one was leaving their travel plans to the last minute.

Taylor Phinney:

Cool to see @janibrajkovic out on the course today! Who ever said this year's worlds was flat.......was either blind or cruel. Or both. ;^)

Also annoyed at AFL grand final replay. World champ race is going to be totally overshadowed in local media.

Worlds are soooo going to be overshadowed. It is such a shame that a big opportunity for a big event for a little sport like cycling in aus will be overshadowed.

I don't think it will make much difference. There would have been very little media coverage anyway. Coverage for anything but footy, cricket, tennis at Oz Open time and (in Melbourne anyway) the Spring Racing Carnival, is nearly non-existent. A few years ago the World Swimming Championships were held in Melbourne and it seemed to be only swimmers who knew or cared.

It's a pity for the women's road race though. Many of the blokes who would otherwise have chosen to watch the race at the course will probably go looking for a TV set instead.

Edit: Publicans and other sellers of alcohol will be chuffed to get the Grand Final all over again.

It's a bit ****ed with the draw in the AFL. Still its only the 60k Collywobble bogans who'll be interested and I don't think any of them know what a bike is. :D

Oh and over here in the West, the World Championsihps have recieved ZERO coverage. :(

Australia has qualified the following quotas for the Championships :

* Elite Men - nine riders in the road race and two in the time trial
* Elite Women - six riders in the road race and two in the time trial plus Oceania Champion in each event
* U23 Men - five for the road race and two for the time trial plus Oceania Champion in each event

So i hear the WC are going to be upstaged by some other match.

Anyone else see the irony?

Our thing, cycling is quite used to getting upstaged by bigger sports (fanbase wise). Football, F1 and Tennis.

And yet here, the world championships are given to Australia, and the sport will now be upstaged, for once, by a sport smaller than itself

Australian rules football. I mean, what the hell is that
;)

Sad in a way isnt it. :(

What no radio during the Worlds?

Let me know if this has been discussed in the 60 preceding pages:

Bettini talking to the Gazetta (in Italian) discussed how it is difficult to do the DS at this Worlds - the first where all DSs are banned from communicating with their team during the race - on radio or from the car.

I think this changes things quite a lot.

I only read about this the other day, nothing has been said here. I wonder what it will do to team cohesion on the road.

I dont have a problem with other sports but yes, If cycling was too popular and mainstream it would end up on pay TV or some rip-off subscription channel.

I'm kind of happy its a seen as a minor sport at the minute, but obviously cycle racing is a far superior sport in my eyes.

Hey, if you like watching a bunch of dudes in lycra you'll probably like AFL as well. From what I can see it's sort of a high powered homoerotic volleyball match if it included the finer points of school yard tag.

Just sayin'.

The worst thing that could happen to bike racing in Australia is for it to be accepted by the mainstream audience.
