I forgot the Roubaix 2nd. But including De Panne is where you lose me

If we are gonna bring up competition then I might as well say that the Sanremo win, and Roubaix podium are all thanks to MvdP anyway, and frankly by competition we probably gotta plop Vingegaard in 4th for his Tour result alone
On reflection, I do agree that Vingegaard at the very least belongs ahead of the gap I put behind Philipsen.

I do think that arguing that Philipsen's classics success was all thanks to Van der Poel undermines your argument that there isn't a big gap between Van der Poel and Roglic.

I also don't think a Vuelta stage is worth more than De Panne. Roll of honour speaks for itself. As does being a big cycling country WT race.

Any of the voters who don't put Pogacar top, Evenepoel second or third, and three from Van der Poel, Roglic, Vingegaard, Philipsen, O'Connor, Girmay, Merlier to complete their list really needs to be held to account and/or have their position as a voter rescinded. Anyone else acceptable to place in the top five?

I mean i don't care on who had slightly better or worse season, results vice, the gap is what is under scrutiny here and obviously it's some sort of bias based artificial gap at play. A classics specialist scoring two to three big wins is comparable to stage race specialist scoring two big wins. On top of that Rogla was in contention for at minimum a podium place at the Tour.

So all in all the gap argument has some big gaps in it.

Please point me to the part of my post that says anything about a decline.
Here:
your fandom of Roglic is clouding your judgement more by the month.
Not disputing the fact that Vuelta > Sanremo, but on the flip side, three Tour stages > three Vuelta stages and De Panne win + second in Roubaix > Dauphiné win. Everything else is small fry, and Philipsen has more of that anyway.
Vuelta alone is better than Philipsen’s season. De Panne is almost nothing, comparable to Rogla’s spring.

My top 5:
1. Pogi
2. MVDP
3. Evenepoel
4. Philipsen
5. Roglic
I put Evenepoel higher than you did?

Just because I'm a fan of Evenepoel and hope he wins everything he participates in, doesn't mean I can't be objective in such rankings. Being a fan of MVDP also helps, but I found his season to be better than Evenepoel's.

Sure seeing Evenepoel ride well in the TDF was great as a confirmation to non-believers that he can ride a GT, but it was a 3rd place. And double in Olympics is one of the most unique things you can achieve, it's more unique than Pogacar's season even, imo, but it's also only 2 races.

MVDP won 2 monuments, gave away his chance for a third (MSR) to a teammate, showed he can achieve more in harder terrains during LBL and WC. Although I get there might be a discussion between these two, because MVDP didn't really perform during the summer (TDF + OG), which he should.

When Roglic blew up and eventually was catched by Evenepoel? Because Evenepoel was the smarter one.

Was he? In such situation you have to give it all, or else forget about it. If that is on why you are there, to win. Still your reply confirms, "the gap" is mostly imagination, by some. If there really was a gap, as some suggested, we wouldn't have this conversation.

1. Tadej Pogačar

Best season ever, 2 Grand Tour wins, 2 monument wins and the WCRR win put him miles ahead of everyone.

2. Remco Evenepoel

Hesitated a bit between him and Mathieu but still went with Remco because of his historical Olympic double, third place at the Tour, WCTT win and second in Il Lombardia.

3. Mathieu Van der Poel

Just like last year, huge spring campaign but the Olympics and the Tour were a bit of a let down. Finished the season strong with a podium in the WCRR.

4. Ben O'Connor

This season from O'Connor was the definition of punching above his weight. Unexpected podiums in both the WCRR and the Vuelta where he was together with Roglič the main protagonist of the race and also a good fourth place in the Giro.

5. Jonas Vingegaard

Fourth, Fifth and Sixth were very close in my book. Still went with the Dane ahead of Roglič because his second place in the Tour is worth more or less the same as the Slovenian Vuelta win and he was better in the shorter stage races winning Tirreno, Tour of Poland and O Gran Camiño.
