Teams & Riders Vincenzo Nibali discussion thread

From TBM press:

Today Vincenzo Nibali was the author of a great attack inside the final hour of racing: “It’s as if I had done a full gas 50km time time trial”, he explains.

“We wanted to make the race as difficult as possible – comments the Italian champion – and possibly play Gasparotto’s “card” climbing the Mur of Huy for the last time. For this reason, with 50km to go I decided to start first with a small group of fifteen units that were then reduced to six “.

“We quickly got along very well. We were going with a very high pace and so the gap grew quickly until we reached almost a minute. Then from behind the peloton began to recover ground and the advantage fell progressively. Before the last climb, Tanel Kangert and I got up. It was a very fast race and the average was very high with stage numbers of the Tour de France “.

I do not think he will be a factor at all at LBL...today was a weak a$$ show.

Can't wait to quote you again when he will win LBL. How on earth was it that weak?

That guy is a pure tactical genius. He hasn't won this but he bears a huge responsibility onto Valverde loss. Just for this, he deserves a huge amount of respect. He is (one of the guys) that made this FW awesome. Not only because Bala winning streak ended, but just because the entire scenario has been different for once.

That's why the shark is one of my favorite rider: unpredictable, tactical assassin and always on the offense. A pure rider with guts that can master various terrains and races.

Hope he gets this.

Nibali simply needs to hit a slightly better shape than in in 2017.

In Le Tour? Vuelta 2017 shape is good enough to challenge for the win and maybe is the best he can for a GT. I think there will be other factors in play for him in order to finish in yellow, the TTT being one.
Nibali never had the top climbing days in 2017 that he showed in 2016 and 2015, but hit his highest level in the autumn classics. I think he can do better in 2018.

If he's as good as in 2017 he needs to be lucky to win. If he's better he needs to be unlucky to lose.

The one thing that could go horribly wrong is the TTT and the first week.

Agreed for the TTT, it's really a weak point. He's gonna get destroyed by Sky and BMC.

But after 2014 epic cobbled stage and his great performance at RVV, depending on the team around him, this stage could gain him some time.

Well, they have some good roulers for the TTT, Ion, Gorka, Mohoric (altough i don't know if he riders Le Tour), Haussler, himself and maybe Navardauskas.

That's right, but I'm not sure that all of them will be on the TDF team. Currently they announce: Koren, Izagirre bros and Pozzovivo alongside Nibbles. They might add Navardauskas/Sivtsov/Pelizotti to this roster, but it's only speculation.

Plus I'm not sure if Haussler is a good fit. Why not about Mohoric.

At the end of the day, it's not terrible but, compared to BMC/Sky, he will eventually lose time. Not sure about Mitchelton/Sunweb/QS rosters, but even against them they might struggle for real.

In the Vuelta last year, TBM lost :31 over 13K. The Tour TTT is 35K, so project a potential of 1:30 lost as the outside bounds of what is reasonable to expect. That being said, I think TBM is going to have a much stronger team for the Tour in 2018, and I think a loss of 1:00 is more likely than 1:30, and a loss of :30 is more likely than 1:30. I am often wrong, and events may prove this to be another occasion on which this is true, though.

In the grand scheme of things most probably Froome will not ride and Thomas will find a way to disappear in one important stage or crash. Richie, if he stays on his bike will loose all he has in the TTT on the cobbles and descents. The most dangerous is Movistar but it'll be fun to watch the three amigos riding through France in July.

Sure, BMC stink at that discipline.

Yeah, Porte vs Nibali could be a fun duel as soon as the road goes downhill :D

Actually, the longer I think about it the more I'm looking forward to July. This tour could actually be really good if froome is banned
I don't think its depends that much on if he will ride or not, he has the Giro in the legs and its a pretty good and varied route with Nibali, Movistar, (Porte) and (Bardet) all lining up at their peak or very close to. Im very confident we will have a good race contrary to last year, I see at least a 2010-race (which tbh has been the best Tour recently).

He had the Tour in his legs at the Vuelta and he was flying, as much as he can lately. But it doesn't matter, I'd say 99% he will not start the Tour.

Quote me all you like, would be happy to be proven wrong.

No hints about his condition but Nibs gives a few conclusions after yesterday's recon:

“The addition of two climbs change a bit the race because that is a delicate phase in which you risk to spend more energy that then would serve in the final. It is a completely new Liege for me because it also changes some parts and Roche is tackled from a new point. Or at least I do not remember ever doing it"

The race seems more suitable for less explosive riders, so more similar to my characteristics. But it's still a one-day race, there are riders who arrive very well prepared and have this race as the only goal of the season.

It will be an anomalous Liège because the change of parcours makes it harder. We must also see how it will be interpreted. Then there is this tremendous heat, which has never been seen in Belgium, and it is the first time we find it in this season.

Valverde can do a little more than Alaphilippe. Then there are attackers who can start from afar, I think of Fuglsang, Kreuziger. They do not wait for the final and they can go on the break.”

Hour after hour I'm getting more convinced that he'll be very good tomorrow. Victory? He have to drop everybody and arrive with at least 30 seconds on the chasers at the foot of Ans, won't be easy, almost impossible I would say. But I'm pretty sure that he'll try something and be a major factor in the race.

20 seconds will do. Ans is not the Mur De Huy, Caruso almost hung on with 9 seconds.

Team presentations today, CN report on Nibali here: http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/vincenzo-nibali-it-will-be-a-very-unusual-liege-bastogne-liege/

Vincenzo did speak a bit more, cycling pro net has a video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rt2vk31rL4k

In short, Amstel not too good, Fleche better, tomorrow we’ll see. He wants to race “tranquillo”, “condizione buona”. Does not seem super confident but he is cooking something.

Best part:

Do you think that someone will try a very long range attack?
Nibs with the most poker face available: It’s not excluded

On the same youtube channel, Valverde says they must keep an eye on Nibs and he thinks Vincenzo will attack on Roche
