The irony of Copeland lauding the Giro was a poorly placed police moto in the Blockhaus stage caused an unnecessary crash and ruined the race of two or three GC riders.

There are organizational problems in almost every big cycling race out there. Cycling as a sport is impossible to control, for a number of different reasons.

I don't buy the idea that the Tour is the only one to blame here but it's pretty clear that in the last few years we've had an increasing number of accidents unrelated to race situations (Froome, Yates, Nibali, Sagan, etc). ASO can surely do something to improve his security measures.

Vincenzo Nibali is in his new villa in Lugano and the mood is good. "I rested, even if the pain in the fractured vertebra is felt. They prescribed painkillers, but I forgot to take them. Masochist? No, I'm someone who has a rather high threshold of pain. "

Yesterday afternoon he met for the first time Martino Donati, who gave him a corset to wear at least 15 days. It is rather voluminous and limiting. "They told me that it is important that the vertebral column be helped as much as possible. I hope that in 15 days this will allow me to go back on my bike and start pedaling again.

On Monday the captain of Bahrain-Merida will have an MRI scan. "It is useful for us as a means of confrontation in this recovery phase, and above all - explains Emilio Magni, Nibali team health manager - to compare the data with the resonance we will perform in 2-3 weeks"

As Dr. Magni explained to me, continues Nibali, I will follow a recovery program by submitting myself to portable magnetotherapy applications. They will apply electrodes to the compressed vertebra, and it will be controlled by a device that will be like a smartphone, and which I can keep in my pocket. In short, I will turn into a small robocop.

He will have to keep it as long as possible, even twelve hours. Then, in a few days, we will also start a physiotherapeutic plan based on electrostimulation and massages, which we will develop with our health staff and Michele Pallini, Vincenzo's personal physiotherapist.

The less good news? That the program is not easy, because this injury is not so simple as it appears to be. The Vuelta? It's tomorrow (it will start on August 25th, ed) and time is running out. The risk that for Vincenzo the recovery time will be lengthened and that even his world championship dream (Innsbruck) becomes complicated, it is not just a bad hypothesis. It's a serious possibility, unfortunately.

On the Italian forum I've read that Slongo said to Rai that the plans for the rest of the season won't change and he'll ride the Vuelta.

You didn't need an Italian forum. It was posted on this very topic a couple of days ago. Unless the injury doesn't heal according to the timetable he'll start the Vuelta.

Vincenzo Nibali will undergo surgery for the treatment of the tenth thoracic vertebrae fracture after a crash during Stage 12 of Tour de France on Thursday July 19th.

“After consultations of the Team BAHRAIN MERIDA medical staff with various specialists and after an attentive and careful examination of the athlete’s clinical condition and future perspectives” explains BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team Doctor Emilio Magni “the Team and the rider agreed to the decision to have a percutaneous vertebroplasty surgery. The procedure is going to take place on next week in Italy”.

That's bad. I assume no Vuelta then. He was supposed to be riding his bike again next week and not undergo surgery :(

Brutal

The Tour desperately needed him and to now possibly lose him for the rest of the season on something so stupid is immensely frustrating.

As reported also here on CN, the goal is to accelerate recovery times and keep plan A active, that is, return to training one week after the surgery and be able to ride the Vuelta and the worlds. The sugery will take place on Monday so if everything goes well in a few days he'll resume normal activities, it's a non invasive procedure. Let's hope nothing is compromised.

Bahrain was really strong in the 3rd week. Makes it even worse that Nibali went down.
This was his big chance to win a second Tour...don`t think he will be in the position again.
