Nibali's mountain training leading up to the tour was practicing how to respond to an alien attack by Froome.
It's different from his usual squalo recover and shark hunt back to the lead.
I heard he trained following a motobike uphill and responded to brief periods of the bike's acceleration.

It seems to work if you think of how he held on so well to Contador yesterday.
I wonder if he'll have the same confidence tomorrow to stay on AC's wheel when AC attacks - and not bonk.
Would be great if he did stay.

thanks for the info, also hoping to see Astana helper can do better than stage 8.

To be fair Contador never attacked full out. It was obvious from his cadence and his facial expression. We'll know more tomorrow.

Is Riis really that stupid? Yesterday he forgot to tell AC some rider already crossed the line, and today he did not understand why Nibali want to lose the jersey. No wonder he never directed AS to tour victory except 2010.

Riis is clearly talking smack. I'm sure that if Astana chased down the break and kept the MJ, he'd say that it was a useless waste of energy. Just playing the media to create the impression that Astana is doing everything wrong. Ignore him and focus on the job ahead. Hopefully, the boys can take it easy tomorrow in the first half and then do something in the last two climbs.

He attacked enough to drop the whole field except Nibali. Poor Richie, after last year when he dropped Contador like a stone on AX3 and now watching his back. Amazing what a new regimen of training can do for a rider. Yes, we'll know more tomorrow.

If they can get a rider in the break AC will attack on Chevreres I think :Riis:

Nibali looked very tired at the end of today stage, i think it will be a very hard day for him tomorrow.
Italian television keeps repeating bull**** about the fact that he doesn't feel any pressure at all, but yesterday Contador made very clear that he will do everything he can to take back what was lost on the cobble, and even Nibali is not so calm anymore.

He need to defend tomorrow tryng to minimize the damage, and then regain his quietness with the rest day.

Birdsong talked to the Italian media this morning and said he was feeling better and that he would use todays stage to further recover from his bad stomach.

Nibali is tired as the whole team, but make no mistake: everybody must feel tired at this point. We're nine days into the race and we have yet to see a rest day. Tomorrow will be about recovery more than anything else. If you have a bad day there might be minutes at stake.

Very interesting. He'll get another opportunity tomorrow to test it!

Of course he feels pressure! He is leading the GC and knows Alberto will be hunting his scalp tomorrow. Geez that would make anyone nervous after the little taste he got yesterday. I hope he knows some meditation techniques so he can enter a peaceful place and get some rest. Tomorrow I think he will need to call on everything he has to stay on that wheel, it's going to be a rough ride. Hopefully the new response techniques he trained prior to the Tour will help him out. Whatever happens he is a champion IMO!

He gets a massage, eats some dinner, talks to his wife and daughter, puts life in perspective and goes to sleep happy and - tranquillo.:) Everything looks possible after a good nights' rest.:)

I think the reason they let Gallopin go is that now they can potentially try to send Tangert/Scarponi to early break tomorrow. They might feel that as the only way to get dom helping Nibs against the last push of AC. We'll see tomorrow.

As a huge Nibali fan , I actually doubt this pic. Did you read the article I posted yesterday. Apparently he only slept one hour before 2012 Tour ITT, because he was so nervous. That is only for the fight of podium position. Imagine this time he is leading the Tour and fighting for the WIN.

I don't think it is planned, it just so happened. Apparently this happened

"Vincenzo Nibali initially headed to the Tour de France podium area after the finish of stage 9 to Mulhouse, perhaps thinking he had to climb on the podium."

In those 2 years he has matured, learned to be tranquillo, gotten married and has a daughter. Now he knows what is truly important in life :). And he probably won't sleep a wink, but I hope he gets good rest.

I sure hope so. I envy you. I guess no matter what happened tomorrow on those vicious slope, you will be smiling. ( of course unless Porte drops everyone) :D
