Nibali absolutely needs Pelizotti and preferably another teammate in the break tomorrow.

And most of all a bit more legs.
Not an easy task, need at least 1 minute on Big Mouth and maybe 30 sec on Quintana.
Plus not losing more time to Pinot and Zakarin.
If he attacks on the Grappa descent he at least won't have to worry that Zakarin or Pinot are in his group. ;)

Vincenzo read the race well, not too good legs, great team work but defended very well on a difficult climb for him, I was expecting some time loss to Tom, Nairo and Tibo. I will remain consistent, he will win it, take the maglia rosa like last year, on stage 20.

Re: Nibali discussion thread

What I don't get is what happened to him between stage 16 and now. He looked like the strongest climber of the race on the Stelvio and won the stage, but instead of improving even more (which is what I expected/hoped) he looks horrible. Even worse than on Blockhaus

Illness perhaps? Or that he only thrives in high altitude?

Nibali is stronger when the race gets harder. He is tailormade for brutal stages

He wasn't really much better than Zaka and Pozzo, and Quintana was content to just follow him. I think it was just as much the result of a stage that suited him much better than the vuelta stages and the junior stage yesterday (where he probably was near the same strength as Monday).

Also this. He won the hardest stage of the race and looked really strong there.

Also I have always thought that Nibali has a great stamina, a thing perhaps matched by only Quintana of GC contenders.

I mean he was good on 16 but he was fairly comfortably matched on the climb by 3 other riders but won off the back of his descending. He just hasn't found that final gear that he has had in previous years.

The fact that he still had a dom there today gave him a bit of flexibility on what he was planning so I suppose there's a small chance he decided that *** it, I'll save my big effort for tomorrow and we'll see if we can break Nairo on the descent at the same time.

This was a very hard stage, so I thought he would be better on the last climb. The level is very even among the contenders now. Making your move at the right time can win you the Giro, and I think he's planning it for tomorrow. He will still need some better legs though.

Nibali today is not the same rider in yellow who passed Nieve like a TGV and TT-ed up the Hautacam, he knows that, Slongo knows that and we must understand. We can only guess the reasons, age, slow decline, physiology, whatever. But he is still competitive at the highest level playing to his strengths, endurance, descending, courage, grinta, cold blood, reading the race properly. These attributes helped him get in this situation where he can still win the Giro against younger and sometimes stronger rivals.

Nibali is looking more and more like the old Basso.

A lot of diesel. A lot of guts, but not the strongest in any area. The fact that he is still 3rd is a miracle. If he pulls this off it's not because of luck but because of some sort of pure genius.

A miracle that he's still in third? Until today, he's been riding great and today wasn't even that bad, it just wasn't that good.

He's as good as his place on the podium suggests, perhaps even better than Quintana.

Please do not get me started.
He has almost always sucked in super hard stages. Giro 2017 was an exception.

What are some examples of when he didn't do well in super hard stages?

That was young Nibali. From 2013-14 onwards he became different and in 16-17 he looks like he became full diesel.

I do not know situation is not perfect but is not bad, with comlicated descent from monte grappa ahead and strong team, clearly actually stronger then burned Movistar
today for me he seemed to be stronger then Quintana, but problem is that he need to put at least 20s on him before TT and minute to Tom, Pinot and Zakarin will not beat him in TT, apart from dumoulin there will be relativelly small gaps between group of favourites so hopefully tomorrow will rain :)

Rumours say Nieve still have trouble sleeping at night, then he think back at Gardeccia and it gets a little better, but he still needs some relaxing music at times to rest properly.

He didn't look good today; very tired. But he can still pull this off, his grinta is still there :). With some good rest and the proper team setup tomorrow he can do another Great ride and get enough buffer on BM Tom to take it down. Pinot is the one that looks the freshest right now!!!

Today both Nibali and Quintana spent alot of energy on their downhill escape ...it was obvious...Movistar blew all its riders
Luckily for them it kinda worked and Dumoulin was put in trouble...but Nibali was also troubled

This from Gasperotto made me laugh

There is always a price to be paid for arrogant disrespect in the peloton :).

The only one who got away with it was LA and he paid in the end :)
