The guy on twitter who posted the footage said it was two girls. Dutch fans? Don't think so rather idiots. Remember the girl with the phone on Hautacam? Or the phone he "received" on his back while on the way to win MSR?

Not really different from the Italian idiots that you often see on the Zoncolan, just even more of them.
I think we need more barriers on big MTFs at the Tour and there have to be real consequences for the idiots who run alongside the cyclists/come waaay to close.

The barriers were there but nobody cared and there was no proper security. Watching the footage is like watching the scene of the crime over and over. ****

I am really sad for him, he had real chance at least podium at this TdF.

It would be good if someone can take action against such kind of spectators, because it is clear, that he was shot down with camera strap. And from the beginning it was clear that it was serious crash since he was unable to get up.

And people who are causing such crashes are in general even unable to come to say at least sorry... .

My instinctive reaction was to be appalled at the guy yanking him to his feet. That could have seriously nasty effects with some back injuries.

I was watching an online feed, and the commentators were talking about how dangerous it gets when fans get so close, especially with those huge flags. Sure enough, someone became a victim of those 'fans.' It's talked about every years, and the organizers don't do anything. Not only were there too many unruly fans, but the colored smoke was also nerve wracking. That's actually when Nibali fell, when they were in one of the smoke areas.

I am very impressed by his recovery. Heroic, for sure. The quick image they had of him, he looked in pain and I thought that's it, he can't continue. The fact that he got on the bike and continued was great enough, but to almost catch the leaders was phenomenal.

Would have been a big favorite for the win, for sure. I think he had it in him to make a few digs to break them, but alas...

To be honest, watching this fan video, it really makes me shudder (for the lack of a better word). He is seemingly in great pain, but soem guy instantly lifts him up another one puts him on back on the bike. And there he is, back riding up the Alpe, before he even knows what happened. You can even see how he feels his back when he rides away. Brutal sport, sad day for cycling.

If froome went down in the same manner they would have called the army.

Vuelta 2017 showed exactly how to deal with this issue. There have been plenty of warnings but ASO have their craniums firmly lodged in the distal end of their digestive system. In any other sport there would be serious legal repercussions for this inadequate risk management.

I'm not saying "since Giro 2016" for nothing:

1. Olympics 2016 - an almost certain medal lost in a crash - ends up with broken collarbone;

2. Vuelta 2017 - a possible victory stolen by a suspicious rider and while trying to put that suspicious rider under pressure during stage 20 an unhappy slip happens - ends up with two broken ribs;

And what happened yesterday was the top of the iceberg... Let's pray that he will be able to prepare himself for the WC.

He certainly was. This was a perfect stage for him and he had the legs to finish it, a huge statement for all the doubters and terrifying prospect for his competition in the third week. I think Nibali was in his best form in a GT since that last week of Le Tour 2015. A very sad morning today. All we can hope now is that he can make a speedy recovery and start the Vuelta to prepare for the worlds.

Why go on about whether Nibali has been lucky/unlucky in the past

Yesterday he was very unlucky, this wasn't even a racing incident, but dumb fans and it is a shame to see him out of the bike race, he was showing some good form

I hope he has a speedy recovery

This was entirely preventable -- just as was Froome's "running man" incident. ASO should just close down the whole AdH for spectators. (Or, better yet, sell tickets for 100 euros apiece at the base of BsM and search bags/ban alcohol etc)

What's with the smoke sticks, anyway? What kind of cycling "fan" would set off one of them as the riders go by? What kind of idiot thinks its cool to run along side a rider shouting gibberish?

No point in singling out any nationality for bad behavior, either. It's a multinational crowd. Same with the booing.

When spectators start impacting the race, it's time to shut it down. Sorry, you can't have nice things.

What a sad moment for all race followers, Nibali looked like he was about to put in a very serious challenge. The fault has to lie with the organisers for this, they have to step up security for the riders as a priority, especially if they are going to continue using the Alpe.
If ASO have to foot the bill for the whole climb to be guarded so be it.
And will someone ban those idiotic flares - the rider don't want to breathe that sh*t.
