I've only started following cycling in 2009 so I just know Vino 2.0 and the stories from the past. One of my favourites right there. His willingness, perseverance, tactical sense mixed with tactical insanity is just too good not to like.
Who's the guy of the current peloton that can fill in that boots, even on a slightly less epic level? Who will attack just because he feels like it? Some options:
- Hoogerland: he doesn't have tactical sense and he's way off the epic level (in terms of wins at least). Perhaps if we give him a brain his legs can do something of that magnitude.
- Cancellara: when is he riding a GT without having to baby sit fragile climbers and all around pseudo-GC riders? Go on mountain breaks (Hushovd 2011 style), derail sprinters train and maybe Fabian can be a decent pick.
- Velasco: not really obvious but when I think of Tropea, Giau, Gap, Alpe (2011), Kappelmuur, Fuente De (2012)..... He certainly has the attacking style even if the terrain doesn't suit him. Well, he's just too nice. Stab someone in the back and you'll have a chance Velasco
- Txurruka: he attacks but doesn't win. Now he doesn't even have a team. He's a bit like an overhyped indie band that is cool to like.
- Madrazo: keep yourself without crashing for a season and then we'll see.
- Morkov: probably something like 20 breaks this season but only the attacking style won't cut it.
- Bakelandts: win something, top 10 a GT (he's not far now), attack on monuments and maybe...?
- De Gendt: really obvious pick! The guy clearly has balls (I mean solo on the Stelvio, attacking on the Mortirolo?!) can top10 GT's. What are his chances off nailing a classic?
- Nieve: epic is his definition, I mean has he ever done well on a stage with less than 4000m of climbing? The classics part and racing outside GT's is still to be proved but well....
Any inputs?
Oh yeah Nibali is a really great pick, another insane yet GC rider. I forgot about him... Gilbert I didn't forget but he doesn't really strike me as a longe range attacker. But yes, he's pretty spectacular and has a great tactical sense. MaybeAfrank said:With the help of Vino, Nibali will become the italian Vino.
I would add a in-form Gilbert to the list as well.
there is no other. vino is king.trevim said:<<snip>>

Ironman is too hard, something like SuperFrog triathlon would be more suitable.Bavarianrider said:Vino should target the Ironman Hawai next season.

This should be discussed in the race design thread then.GPdesAmeriques said:He'll start his own ultratriathlon:
