Vino's last victory

The farewell of Vino in Monaco was really a very nice event and provided the the right setting for Vino's last race.
At Saturday evening, French television even made a live TV show, which included Philipe Gilbert, Eddy Merckx, Richard Viirenque and of course Vino.

The highlight of this great event was a 55 km criterium race in the harbor of Monaco.
The peleton featured many cycling greats, such as Gilbert, Nibali, the Astana team, Froome, as well as legends like Merckx,Durand and Virenque. During the first 10 laps Vino's kids were also within the peleton, after they left the race really started.
I have to admit, in the finale it was a bit too fast for myself. It seems like the younguns thoughtthat this was the Formula one race of Monaco.
When only current Pros were upfront and were racing at above 50km/h i called it a day and settled for the Grupetto. Of course Vino won. Gilbert was second, Nibali third.

In the evening there was a huge party with 250 friends and relatives which was highlighted with a beutiful firework.

Vino was more then just a teammade

Vino had many ups and downs in his career, just like me. He was a great fighter who never quitted, even after really bad crashes. When we first met in the year 2000, Vino didn'rt have an easy start at Team Telekom. Coming from Casino, he was used to have a captain's role, now he had to work for others, as well. Vino never had any problem with that, however, sometimes he struggled with paceing. When we hit the mountains in the Tour, Vino was sprinting into the climbs, so that i could hardly follow him.
Vino was always there for you when you needed him, he was really a very good person.

I visited Vino twice in Kazachstan and there i really felt how much Vino is loved by his countrymen and what cycling boom he caused in his country.
The differnce to Germany is, that even Vino faced doping accusations, his country was on his side and never let him down and they offered him the chance to come back.
Of course Vino payed back with his gold medal in London.

There couldn't have any better ending for his career."
