Just read about the Norge kid with the highest max.
Norwegians seem to dominate this list.
the difference between the scores of a few of these athletes is amazing
97.5 Svendsen
92.5 Lemond
88.0 Indurain
84.0 Armstrong.
It is easy to see that Lemond had some amazing capacity and is backed up by his results.
Still having Scandinavians with 13 of the top 16 scores ever must be viewed with a grain of salt...

97.5 Oskar Svendsen Cycling 18 year old from Lillehammer, Norway. The test was conducted in Sept 2012 at the University College of Lillehammer by physiologist Joar Hansen.
96.0 Espen Harald Bjerke Norwegian cross country skier
96.0 Bjørn Dæhlie Norwegian cross country skier though another source has him recording a best of 90 ml/kg/min.
93.0 Kurt Asle Arvesen Cycling .
92.5 Greg LeMond cycling
92.0 Matt Carpenter runner Pikes Peak marathon course record holder
92.0 Tore Ruud Hofstad Norwegian cross country skier
91.0 Gunde Svan Swedish XC-skier
91.0 Harri Kirvesniem Finnish cross country skier
88.0 Miguel Indurain cycling
88.0 Anders Aukland cross country skier .
87.4 Marius Bakken Norwegian 5k record holder
87.0 Jon Anders Gaustad cross country skier
86.4 Edvad Boasson Hagen road cyclist
86.0 Thor Hushovd cycling
86.0 Ole Einar Bjœrndalen biathlon
84.4 Steve Prefontaine runner from the US
84.0 Lance Armstrong cycling

A definite list? To few scandinavians, a few more (and a fin)!

94 Juha Mieto Fin
94 Sven-Åke Lundbäck Swe
92 Per Elofsson Swe
90 Tomas Wassberg Swe
All cross country skiers

My favourite that sums up the discussion nicely is Bernard Hinaults claim of 93.5, then cue Lemond claiming his would be 94 if in racing weight. Mine is bigger than...

How many of these athletes are on a 'program' at the time of test? And don't try to tell me "none of them".

Re: Programs historical

Swedes Blood Doping & EPO before Conconi started his program in Italy, so who knows... but that doesnt change VO2Max though does it?

18 yo cyclist with a 97? that is *** strength. Does he have significant results?

Remember that these figures are only for athletes who have been tested and have shared their results. Surely there are distance runners, IM triathletes, distance open water swimmers etc who would place well on this list.

Would be interesting to know how guys like Chris McCormack, Craig Alexander, Mo Farah, Usain Bolt would do in a VO2 max test.

Doping (at least with EPO) changes VO2max

Usain Bolt would do awful. He doesn't train to enhance oxygen uptake. His efforts are almost purely anaerobic.

Probably hundreds, if not thousands, especially if you reach back in history a bit...which is yet another reason why such lists are entirely pointless (the others being 1) unverified accuracy of most of the data, and 2) the possibility that the results are tainted by doping).

no he would not necessarily do awful. even for sprinters a high VO2 max is valuable for recovery. in order to train at the level he does it is necessary to train several hours without significant build up of lactic acid.

i have seen VO2 max lists for sprinters and they were all in the 90s. i seem to remember edwin moses' was around 94. i'll try to dig up a link.

edit: i did a little bit of googling and couldn't come up with anything that supported my above statement.
