Fwiw Van Aert said that he realized he was on the wrong side as soon as he came out of the roundabout and stopped riding with about 400 metres to go. Like I said, how a bunch of people sprinted for the line that wasn't there is beyond me.
Maybe they thought there was a slight chance that the commissars might consider the finish line to be extrapolated out to the side, and didn't want to have given up in case that was the case.

Even if they would have that incredibly dumb thought (like come on, there's not even a way for the organizers to know who would win there), it's still very dangerous and irresponsible. You can't expect people to feel bad for you when there's safery issues if you're willing to risk injuries on yourself and spectators doing stuff like this imo.

It can indeed seem dumb to you or me, but if their only purpose in 4 hours plus has been to try to win the stage, and there is a slight possibility of it, and you see that others are trying to do the same thing, and you are full of adrenaline (let's assume just that) and short of oxygen, and your career is predicated upon getting to a line as quickly as possible, and you don't know they won't decide the winner that way, and you are young and competitive, and your heart is at about 190 bpm, and ...

Plenty of people do much dumber things in those circumstances.

Saw the replay of it all on the highlights video. That was super messed up, the roundabout clearly funneled the riders into the wrong line. One guy waving a flag isn't enough to fix the obvious impetus to take the wrong line. To get the correct line, they had to make a super janky, very slow right turn past the apex of the roundabout. Ridiculous.

I mean, this will be the most interesting thing about this race, but man, pro cycling didn't need another amateur hour move at this point.

Returning to civilization post a winter vacation far, far away, near zero internet access, for a moment I was torn about whether to go back to wilderness immediately, media showers and everything taken into account.

But this thread convinced me that I should stay. Thanks :)

I hope by today's incident the road season is hereby rebooted and game for some proper bike racing tomorrow.
