The problem with Calar Alto is that after 7km of difficult climbing, there is 7km of flat. There will still be there or four sky bots with him by then no matter what, so it becomes an incredible challenge to stay away from them. You get rid of the team, then it's possible to gain a lot, but no team is strong enough to do so

I remember froome losing his teammates wheel on the climb to lpsm in 2015 and we all know how that ended. That just doesn't mean anything for froome

That's 7km mainly false flat, hard for a lone attacker to stay away from the choo choo sky train.

Climb profile, not stage profile. Vuelta stage profiles are notoriously poor.

Edit: it rises 150m in 6.5+km: that's pretty flat.

There are 5 or so ks at 2-3% mostly before it ramps up again, that's almost false flat.
