Why bother though? No need for Froome to take the kind of risks on the descent to keep Nibali or Aru at bay. And even then, probably wouldn't have had enough to hold off on the flat.

Contador is way down in the GC before we've had any proper mountains - he understandably is prepared to gamble - for Froome though the risk is greater than the potential reward.

Meh. Looks like Contador won't even gain time on De La Cruz and Van Garderen...

Btw, De la Cruz and Van Garderen aren't rivals of Contador but their teams will probably chase Contador when he attacks since they are ahead of him on GC atm, that's why those two losing time is important for Contador.

Anyways, Van Garderen very unlucky today, a bad crash

Also just realized that TVG was in the Contador group when he crashed, very strong, yet loses time due to bad luck
(I didn't catch most of the climb, I only opened the channel when I read here that Contador was attacking, I thought TVG was in the Nibali/Aru Gr. before the crash)

It's always been his strategy. Froome not wearing leaders jersey = random Froome attacks. If in leaders jersey, control and wait for TT. Usually he's not in the leaders jersey at the vuelta though. But yea it would've not been a smart move to ride against a group of 15 with 40km still to go for probably no time gain.
