You live and learn: I'm a native speaker, a graduate, a teacher, widely read, lived in England nearly all my life, and I've never come across the phrase before.

Likewise. But I will endeavour to insert it into conversation wherever possible from now on.

It's a common phrase in the American South.

Really?

I didn't thing "That's all she wrote" would be new to any native speaker.

It's as common as "That's all folks", "The fat lady sings", "Ballgame!" or "game over" in my experience.

I'm expecting it to be one of those as well. Would like it to be Garmin.

Maybe it's strictly a North American saying. Though now the cat's out of the bag there will be no stopping it!

Please no retorts about cats in bags, its just a saying...

And that example proves that we speak different dialects: "Ballgame!" is as rare as "That's all she wrote" in my experience.

Two nations divided by a common language indeed (Shaw, not Springstein)

This startlist/field is a joke, considering what will be left in the 3rd week.

Any absolute favorites for the TTT ?
Seems to be Garmin, because they have 3 very good TTers in. :D
Followed by Saxo with 2

Haussler is riding for XACOBEO GALICIA.... Very interesting
215 HAUSSLER Heinrich

And he became Spanish? I thought going through two nationalities would be enough for anybody.

edit: also, I really, really like Cervélo's team. It's a shame they're disappearing.

I follow some of the Vuelta riders on twitter, and they've been posting shots of the temperature from their power meters, etc. All the numbers are above 40. I think the whole Liquigas team hit the pool after training, and I believe it was Spartacus who posted a pic of a teammate who got off the bike and climbed into a fountain in full kit. If this keeps up, the announcers better have a lot to talk about because I can't see the peloton going hard on sprint days if they can avoid it.

I expect the TTT to be more of a spectacle than anything else - I hope problems don't cause big time gaps in the GC.

For a while now the Vuelta has been an August September event. I cant recall them having this problem before. Must be some sort of heatwave.

All the while here in London August feels like January. Im wearing about 3 shirts and a jumper right now

Stupid global warming;)

Yes its a shame. I loved their jerseys, their bikes and "Beyond the Peloton" in HD
But looks like a good Vuelta-squad. Tondo will be interesting to watch. I hope so.

It's a heatwave, but it has little to do with global warming. Just a big mass of hot African air over the Iberian peninsula combined with a high pressure area over the Mediterranean Sea that prevents cold air from the Atlantic Ocean to push hot air away. It's a common weather pattern in the summer, but its frequency and timing varies from year to year. Do expect some tires and/or riders melting down in the first few days of racing :D

EDIT: The Vuelta web site states that stage 1 is 13 km

A prediction from ACF94: Footon servetto to set the best early time. :D

Why do Andalucia get to start last? Shouldn't it be Caisse?

nope. You only get the last slots if the cyclist is on your team. Alejandro is on the naughty step (obv) not on the team for the competition. Think about how Cancellara went second last in the tdf itt. Why? Because 2nd from last year - Schleck, was on Saxo so Saxo get second to last slot.

Next year Saxo will get last slot, even though they didnt win it this year, but because the champ will be on their team.

This years vuelta, none of the top 3 or even 4 for that matter are here so organisers choose who they want.

Kind of the same principle Cadel got to wear the number 1 at the giro this year;) No Menchov so they choose who they wont, and while it was probably pity which guided their hand :p i think they made the right choice.:)
