Vuelta a España Vuelta a España 2021: Stage 4 (El Burgo de Osma > Molina de Aragón, 163.9 km)

Philipsen's sprint a bit messed up by that late acceleration of his own teammate. Got boxed in and couldn't recover.

Modolo it was today, but Krieger does the same kind of leadouts, just sprinting to the 200m banner as if it was the finish.

No idea if this is an order from the team (to get sth out of them at least) or just due to inexperience, but if Alpecin really wants to turn those sprinters into leadout men, they definitely need to invest a bit of work over the winter.

He launched his sprint long before Jakobsen in order to get around Matthews & Co. though. Maybe he hadn't won anyway, but both Demaré and Jakobsen were still much better positioned than him.

Cort's major problem was Matthews failing to hold Mezgec's wheel in the leadout , causing Cort to lose ground before starting his sprint - In saying that Cort lacked top end speed.

Well considering he had too put in more of an effort before the last one hundred meters, it was no wonder he was lacking top speed though. He might not have been fast enough anyway, cause Jakobsen's top speed was very impressive, but Jakobsen definitely also had a much easier road to victory than Cort. But EF also messed up by having a teammate at the front inside the final kilometer, who was nowhere near Cort.

The reason why Cort had to put in an effort was because Matthews could not hold Mezgec's wheel - It was a joke that Mezgec had time to turn around looking for Matthews - Cort rode the perfect final when he planned to come off Matthews wheel and launch his sprint - Cort was unlucky to not finish closer - It was noticeable that Mezgec rolled over the finish line and then immediately turned around to ride to the team buses.

I still think that being on Matthews's wheel wasn't the right choice, with both FdJ, Alpecin and DQS in front of them. If he had been on the wheel of his teammate, he would have been sitting right on the FdJ train when the sprint started, but that is obviously easier said than done and it might not have changed the outcome.

When Mezgec released Matthews, Mezgec was nearly level with the FDJ rider leading out Demare, except Matthews dropped the wheel which slowed down Cort - Reckon Cort made the right decision - Following the wheel of Mezgec in a sprint final is usually a wise choice - Cort was unlucky. Anyway lets see what happens tomorrow.

I love the look of Spain. It’s not as naturally beautiful as Italy or France, but has it’s own unique appeal.

Spain has wonderful parts, but others are just really triste. The coast of Catalonia is one of the most beautiful places in the world in my eyes, Galicia is also nice, the isles, without the Tourists, are beautiful... and Madrid, to me, is one of the most wonderful cities in the world anyway... :) And although the area around Madrid / Toledo is also quite depressing, I still find it quite epic if only because of Don Quichotte.

Not much else going on except the usual. Bowling. Bulls stomping all over goats. It's just ridiculous we have to watch it and riders have to put up with it and nobody does anything to prevent it from happening. If you would lock all parties involved in a room for one hour this would get resolved. Currently it's like watching Mo Farah running in front of Usain Bolt on what looks like a 100 meters race. And obviously Mo Farah is to blame after landing on his head. As a bonus the organiser tells you you are indeed watching a 10.000 meters race. Race after race after race ...
