Usually the key DNFs have dried up by this point unless a sprinter misses the time cut, not this Vuelta unfortunately. This will be the lowest winning KOM score in history, I guess?

The current system has far fewer points available than the old system which ran until 2009. Since 2010 the lowest score to win jersey has been Nicolas Edet's 46 in 2013, followed by David Moncoutié's 51 in 2011 and a tie between Luís León Sánchez in 2014 and Omar Fraile in 2016, who both took 58 points.

Carapaz has 30 points and Arensman, his nearest competitor is now less than 8 minutes back. Stage 20 therefore is likely to be crucial, with a max of 38 points available.

Five EF riders up front, Uran had better not need any domestiques today.

Also a disappointing lack of riders of any GC relevance for such a big group...

Bora should let Fabbro have a crack here, he was superb last week but I feel he will end up working for Higuita.

Pinot looked in good shape yesterday but that last climb isn't hard enough

the Vuelta lists Bakelants, but he was involved in the crash, and visibly in pain on that picture above. Maybe it's Meintjes instead.

Movistar Oliveira and Verona in the break, that second to last climb might be a good time to try something with two to pace the descent and valleys.

Seems like all teams are represented in the break, even Kern Pharma.
Edit: oh, wrong, DSM and Lotto missed out

Not sure about the proper racing excitement during this Vuelta but as far as drama is concerned , it delivered big time and it ain't over yet.

Pedersen was involved as well. Also Pacher looks bad

What an awful image

Also I wonder how can Rodriguez rip his shoulder and jersey like that without breaking anything? He must have hit it pretty hard to rip that much.

And Vine crashing that hard again makes me so sad :(

Incredibly photography though I must say as a journalist. But awful scenes really :(

I expected 20 to 30 riders in the break but there re around 40+. S.Yates last 4 GT's riding for GC - Third, twice DNF with COVID and once crashed into - He's one of the better bike handlers of the GC riders.

Carapaz is in the top ten if he gets fifteen minutes. Not that he bothers about it that much, or at least I doubt it, but some teams would. What will the seven EF and BORA riders in the break do about it? Hopefully a possible stage win will rate higher than protecting a top ten.

Cycling is a cruel sport. It really is.

Between the crashing and the covid it's depressing
