I still think he was very, very lucky to have the chance to go for GC at the Tour in 2018 and even luckier that Froome's case meant that he did Giro-Tour back to back meaning Thomas didn't go in as secondary leader but as co-leader, which gave him the chance to win.
It swing in roundabout, in 2019 he was unlucky that bernal broke his collarbone and missed the giro

That 2019 Tour is too hard to say, because the entire reason Bernal was given the time he was was the expectation that going then would mean he would tire on Tignes, and other riders in the GC mix were preserving some energy for it. I know that racing was already harder than it might otherwise have been because of Alaphilippe having been dropped. Tactically it was a very good position for Thomas, but because of when the annulment happened it's hard to either say or really understand what form people were in that day and what might have transpired had the stage gone ahead in full as planned. It's like picking 2003 Beloki in the Doping Draft game. It was supposedly the best Beloki, but he crashed out before we would have the chance to say for sure whether or not that was the case.
