I suspect they'll start chasing him from now on. Others as well. He had his 'redemption' breakaway win. They're not going to give him any more gifts.

I'd be very surprised if the GC teams let Evenepoel go up the road now, unchecked. If he does, he needs to force the move himself (like getting his team to blow the main bunch apart & then launch it on a climb, Finestre style).

Yeah, thanks for the work - I did all the Vuelta stages here a few years ago and one thing I learned was the profiles often have not a lot of relation with reality. As for mountain classifications, that has absolutely nothing to do with how hard the climbs are. It's all about where they are on the parcours and other mysterious deliberations.

Well, the guys at the Tour of Britain finally worked out not to work with Jumbo, so maybe after UAE's "cunning plan" (as Baldrick would say) yesterday then maybe the peloton at the Vuelta have come to the same conclusion?

Sometimes the DSes are so monumentally stupid and do the bidding for the strongest team for no apparent reason letting the strongest team preserve strength and be strong that it just makes me think there's some ulterior reason.

Like, Jim Rutherford as a GM in hockey would do deliberately bad trades where he got absolutely rinsed, because it was so important to him for other GMs to feel that he wouldn't screw them over so that they would be happy to deal with him in the future that he would let them screw him over. I wonder if teams are so scared of getting on the wrong side of a super strong team and seeing their breaks nuked or similar that they just do the work for them.

Really disappointing stage, even if you wanna make breakaway/medium mountain stage.

He probably forces the move. He is a dangerous 'free electron' now in particular for the strategies of GC teams. UAE better uses his energy to break something in the armor of JV to make this Vuelta a bit interesting.

The only such example I have for you, the guy in the camisola amarela literally gave up his chance to win the GC by agreeing to ride in in formation for the team, thus condemning himself to an inevitable defeat in the TT the following day.

Jumbo do this on Angliru, and it'll be the gold standard of absurdity for decades to come, it'd make Mapei Roubaix look like Dimension Data doing a 1-2 in a random Tour de Yorkshire stage.

If Jumbo manages that on Angliru, who do you think will get the stage win?

Chase Evenepoel? Why? Jumbo don't have beef with him.

They're not gonna let him back in GC, so it's unlikely they'll give him 8 minutes again and again, but they'll probably chase breaks to limit the damage.

In fact a massive breakaway is probably the only way for other teams to take the fight to Jumbo

I would love to see Remco do a Contador. He can’t win himself, but he might be able to help the good guy (Ayuso) win. But we’ve already had the Formigal stage and that was a disaster.

They will cross the line simultaneously.

This one should go to the break and the second category climb is in my opinion too easy to have proper gaps.

Movistar will want to win this stage as their headquarters are in Pamplona and Lazkano is one of the biggest candidates. He should have some strong rivals though, especially Ganna is someone who I think that could perform very well maybe Remco too if he goes in to the breakaway again.

He's 19 minutes down, don't think JV won't chase even if he gets 10 minutes up the road, teams going for a top 10 will at that point though, but he could just trackstand at the end and lose 30 minutes on purpose to stop that happening if he isn't bothered about going for a GC place.

The best scenario for the race as mentioned is that Evenepoel stay around to try and stir the pot like Contador but that depends if he still has the form.
