If he and Visma are up for it, Vingegaard could kill this. They could control the first km that has the lower gradient and have him attack in the steep part.
At the Tour he was by far the strongest on these hills save Pogacar and I guess Almeida will definitely be out of position.
People are mentioning Pidcock and Ciccone but when it comes to Grand Tours people that excell in one day races often underperform in comparable stages (or GC guys overperform, whichever way you see it).

It will interesting to see how the GC guys and their teams will comport themselves. Will they be comtent to let a break stay away? Or will they race hard to try and put some on the back foot or eliminate altogether? Given this is more like a San Sebastian or Liege type of race and Vingegaard isn't a classics guy really, Pidcock, Ciccone, Almeida and their teams might want to try and put Visma to the test. Who knows if they are able? But it would be interesting to see them trying.

PS. Thanks Devil's Elbow for the excellent summary of the complex history from the imdustrialization of the region, to the Spanish civil war and ETA. It was much appreciate.

See the first few stages of the Tour and how the Dane fared there. Vingo was the only guy who could match Pogi during his strong attack on a murito. His w/kg is enough to shake everyone off his wheel on Pike (maybe except Almeida).

I know, a classics type of parcours in a grand tour setting is a completely different affair, as strategies and team priorities differ among the two settings. Vingegaard also did well on the "sterrata" type stage and not bad on the pavé ones too. Yet, if you are going to try and challenge him, today is certainly a better chance than on Angrilu, in theory at least, especially for Pidcock.

It's not just that, also pure physiology. Climb like Pike is like 20% explosivity and 80% max. aerobic w/kg. Vingo's explosivity is so good nowadays: out of elite climbers only Pog has better. As for aerobic power, we don't need to discuss it regarding Vingo OFC. I would say that Almeida could have some problems on Pike (he's more like a diesel, not that explosive). Pidcock could be very good there, we will see.

I don't think anyone - apart from the family themselves, of course - knows when the birthday is.
All he (Jonas, not Hugo) said before the start of the race was that the journalists should find out.
it apparently wasn't so hard to find out. It's today

Hugo is his son, who turns one year old today. Usually Vingegaard likes to win for special family occasions.

Unless this is raced incredibly passively there is no way Pedersen stands a chance here.
It's a kilometer at 12,5% followed by only 8 kilometers downhill to the finish. He'll drop like a sack of potatoes if the GC guys go for it.
I think his hope is more to win from the break, not from the peloton. In 2019 Gilbert has won at a similar Bilbao finish (although an easier stage in general) ahead of a bunch of hilly sprinters, with probably more or less fit the Pedersen type.

Tend to agree.

He’d rely on getting into a break and the climbers in the break being controlled by the worst pcm ai.

I get that maybe Vingegaard Only goes for it if someone else reels the break back in and make the race hard enough. But there will be stronger climbers in the break. But sure he has to try, mads has a better chance here than most other stages and he isn’t taking home enough points in the bunch sprints to get the points jersey. So just getting a top 5 and winning the bonus sprint is a decent result for Mads.

I am guessing the break will take it because Visma is keeping their powder dry for Friday.
