Howman said he suspects "some information will come out of the current inquiries that will be equally as significant as BALCO."

Howman wouldn't get into specifics of what he thought might come out of the case being investigated by US prosecutors in Los Angeles, but said WADA has agreed to cooperate in passing along any information it has.

People who used to work with Armstrong have been called in front of the grand jury meeting in Los Angeles.

Armstrong, who won the Tour de France a record seven times, has repeatedly denied allegations he took performance-enhancing drugs.

Federal prosecutors have been taking a look at cheating in cycling for months, aided by Food and Drug Administration Agent Jeff Novitzky, who played a key role in BALCO.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/ot...-significant-as-BALCO-says-WADA-director.html

I didn't really read anything in that article that specifies a time frame. To me it sounds like Howman expects the results to be significant, but what makes you think it will happen soon, as opposed to a year from now?

Don't have a source - but throughout the clinic threads - there's been a lot of references to "the statute of limitations" playing a role / though there has also been mention that in Federal Cases it is sometimes easy to get those waived.

An expert should weigh in?

So I was half wrong, not the first time or the last. Really though, lots of Opera lovers on this forum, who knew so many tuned in.

Shut the f*ck up and stop clogging threads with these stupid posts unless they are relevant to the thread's topic.

You guys are turning this forum into a teenager's Twitter account with all this stupid nonsense.

We don't need to see 50 posts that go back and forth about a typo. None of them are funny, and it's obvious you all think you're about to get a call from Jay Leno to do The Tonight Show.

You're not.

even if the average speed of the tour is lowered by half, it will still be enjoyable and you would see real, honest riding. You won't have Armstrong, Ullrich, Mayo, Heras, Basso and Hamilton chasing each other up Alpe d'Huez with little or no pain showing on their faces.

I hope they clean up the sport and nail Lance, too. But, I still couldn't resist pointing out that the above quote is complete bullsh*t. Doping doesn't take away the pain, it just makes the racing faster. Especially when everyone in the lead group is about equally juiced. Go back and actually pay attention while watching that Alpe d'Huez stage (I assume you're referencing 2003). There was plenty of suffering among the riders listed above.

I like to think of it as adding color and levity to relieve the stress of watching our sport get hijacked (by dopers and corrupt governing bodies) and shot down in flames.

90% of it is not the least bit witty or funny. It just goes back and forth like a stupid teenager sending text messages to his friend who works at McDonalds.

Leave the comedy to the experts. But don't adulterate every thread with sad attempts at jokes that aren't funny.

What do you call this post? Wait, what do you call this post dumbass? The whole thread was stupid and I'm glad I contributed to the stupidity and now you have. Congrats dumbass.

You're going to love Annoying Cuddles Fan 94. The forum is what it is largely because of him/her. And it currently largely sucks.

WADA has been making these "Bigger than Balco" comments for months now.
Nothing new in these comments made during WADA's "Media Day" event.....

The Hog is just attempting to take the spotlight off of Alberto's tainted meat.

Not hard to take the limelight from a guy touring suburban hospitals in the states!

What happened to the good old days?

I was being "ironical." Of course it doesn't mean they aren't in pain!

That may be so... but I get aggravated with thread titles claiming something... then I read the link and it doesn't quite match.

theHog tends to do this a lot... but he's not the only culprit.

It may happen shortly... but I don't read anything in the link indicating that it will. Just that the guy expects it to be as big as Balco (I'm not sure what that means... Balco seemed like a bit of a big build up with little results to me).

When you strip away the dopey athletes who perjured themselves it will be bigger than a petty distribution charge and a money laundering guilty plea of less than 100k, how exciting. At least its another chance for JN to misappropriate funds again as was alleged in the BALCO case.

BALCO was a petty distribution channel? **** me you are a special type of ***. You do remember what was going on at Balco, the design and production of undetectable steroids and medical programs based on (at the time) undetectable drugs. You do realise that WADA came up with a new rule because of the way that BALCO were circumventing the testing procedure by using drugs that were PEDs but not on the banned list and also the fact that Victor Conte gave a lot of evidence on how programs were designed to beat tests. You did know all that didn't you?

Easy killer, I was referring to the actual convictions.

The end result for BALCO was Victor Conte got 4 months, Greg Anderson got 13 months.

Several atheletes/coaches were convicted of obstructing justice/perjury/false statement type charges. I think it was 3 (Marion Jones, Tammy Thomas and Trevor Graham). If they ever actually try Bonds, it could get to 4.

From a numbers standpoint, there wasnt a whole lot of impact. For actual charges relating to the initial crime investigated, only 2 guys paid any penalty... less then 2 years in total. While several others were sent to jail for lying, only two people were actually punished from the initial investigation.

I expect something similar from this case... a very small number of people punished for the actual crime being investigated, with a somewhat larger pool of those getting perjury/obstruction type charges.

13 people were sentenced thanks to BALCO but the impact was far beyond it's judicial success. The BALCO case helped exposed to the public not only the pervasive use of doping in sports but also the efforts dopers use to cover up their doping.

Expect the Armstrong case to show not just the pervasive use of doping in the sport but also the efforts to cover it up and create a myth for commercial benefit.

Yeah, but I don't think 'berto' is gonna get off, at least not easy! Really I hope they catch as many people as possible, hand out big fines, ban the riders who are caught and fix the image and at least help move cycling upward and sport in general. Yeah, I am stating the obvious, but even if the average speed of the tour is lowered by half, it will still be enjoyable and you would see real, honest riding. You won't have Armstrong, Ullrich, Mayo, Heras, Basso and Hamilton chasing each other up Alpe d'Huez with little or no pain showing on their faces. That also includes Rasmussen and Contador. Schleck....well, we'll just have to wait and see.

The fans don't care whether the racers average 350 or 375 watts over the course of the race.

Well in the same way as the Hog's headline is misleading - so is your interpretation of the article.

Howmans actual quote was:
"some information will come out of the current inquiries that will be equally as significant as BALCO."
Unless you associate "significant" with big - but I seem to remember you had the opposite opinion earlier this year.
