Jesus wants to buy you a beer

September 21

What to make of this? Tomorrow afternoon you can score a free beer by showing up to ''Laugh with the Sinners'', an ...
A fuller context for the pub talks is then given: ''That Jesus came to save sinners, not just saints.'' All of which seems to us tiny bit pinched and obtuse if not, in fact, a crate of sour grapes, aimed at guilting Catholics out of putting the bunting up for the big day. No wonder they're offering free beer. (Make ours an Ale Mary.)

I remember reading once about Oktoberfest. Its worth seeing, but not worth GOING to see. Never been myself, this is a busy time of year for me. Sitting in the brew house waiting for a Kolsch style to finish boiling so I can cool it and put it in the fermenter.

I have an offer, if I can get to America within the next 12-24 months, I'll stop by your place for a beer or two, and in return I'll get my friend to make sure that everybody come and visit:

Mmm Kolsch. Funny, it really isn't my style, but I spent a summer in Bonn when I was 17, and drank my weight in Kolsch, and every time I taste one (a good one that is) it is a memory whiplash. Funny how tastebuds can do that.

Now, I don't think I've been here in the pub for a while, so I'll let on. I think I found the best beer in the world. Brugge Zot. Unfiltered at the brewery. I had a couple of days in Brugge during Le Tour this summer, and fell in love with the beer.

That Elysian in a nice brew as well, I lived several years about 10 blocks from their second Seattle location. But Kilt Lifter or Naughty Nelly is my preference for an Emerald City local.

Tonight, to the Abbey to partake of some fine Belgian beer for my birthday. Not sure what it will be though. Suggestions???

I tend to be drawn to Rochefort 8 and Corsendonk dark..... occasionally been known to enjoy Bink too.

Cool!

Perhaps you're like me in that you prefer an 8 to a 10.

If they have Sint Bernardus 12 Abt (the blue label with the jolly fellow), try that at 10 degrees celsius. A magical experience. ;)

+ De Struise's Pannepot Reserva and Abbaye des Rocs Brune.

Along with the Rochefort 8 and the Sint B 12, that rounds out my favourite available donks! :)

But you'll never find my favourite of all (disclaimer: haven't had a Westvleteren yet) because it's a local one brewed in back at a cafe in Hoegaarden. They call it Nieuwhuys Alpaide. It's worth flying over here for! I hope Scott will hunt it down and try it next spring when he's here, because I want to know if it's just me! :)

Happy Birthday.

If the weather is still cooler something dark and moody. I had a bottle of this last time and it was sooooo good. Make sure to get the blue bottle, not the red.

Good to hear you had a great evening! :)

Nostradamus - that's a nice heavy one and very tasty. I'd almost forgotten about that. I've tried other Caracole brews (e.g. Saxo) and they don't do much for me, but Nostradamus is an exception.

One classic that I forgot to suggest to you (and anyone else reading) - though I have already have raved about it on this thread - is Ellezelloise Hercule.

They call it a "stout" over in Ellezelles, but it isn't really a genuine stout other than in colour. If you like smoky flavours, salty licorice and above all cigars, this one's for you.

HerculeStout.jpg

Scott never said if it was available over your way because the brewery is quite small. I have seen it listed on US import websites, so I hope so.

The beer is named after Agatha Christie's Poirot whose birthplace is mentioned in the novels as Ellezelles, a tiny town out west in Wallonie, close to some of the Flemish bergs in the Ronde, KBK etc like the Kluisberg and the Oude Kwaremont.

When tourists visit - usually for the beer because why else would you visit - locals may try to convince them that Poirot was a real guy who grew up there, to the extent that even the town's birth register lists him. ;)

Well. kind of a requirement with mass-market beer, as it is the easiest way to cover the flavour. Never to0 be done with anything actually worth drinking.

I learned my freezer was too cold the other day when I put in a bottle of dry vermouth (saves on ice when I make martinis) and the bottle froze solid. No way 15-20% or so alcohol should go solid in a home freezer.

We cannot get Sierra Nevada here in BC. ( and in fact Deschutes Mirror Pond has just shown up in here the last month or so ), but I had the Glissade ( quite a bit of it ) when down in Arizona at spring break.

Very nice.

This gives me something to look forward to when summer holidays come around - July == Torpedo!

Is this as hoppy as many of the American micro brew IPAs lately have been?

I had one in a brewpub in Flagstaff ( can't remember the name ) in the spring and it was so overly-hoppy I had a headache for 2 days.

It can be a very fine line.

EDIT: Holy Crap Man!!! 7.2 % alcohol by volume, jeebus .............

Yeahh man, just tried the Mirror Pond. Delicious! Thick, nutty copper brown, and very hoppy. Mega hopping is definitely a trend in good brew here in Colorado, and in the western US in general. My standard favs are Avery IPA, and the 60 min Dogfishhead IPA. Although the all time winner is a local Front Range brewery, the Southern Sun, with their many potent unfiltered IPAs (among others, none of which are bottled, unfortunately).

Definitely add the Mirror Pond into the rotation for now though!

I love the Abbey. Great place.

I split the Nostradamus with my wife, not evenly of course.:p

The Abbey is quickly becoming our second home.
