I found a pub in Ottawa that serves Coopers Ale, a great South Australian beer. I'm looking forward to a stubbie tonight over an informal business dinner.

My dad and sister went to Belgium a couple of weeks ago, so I asked them to bring back half a dozen mixed bottles, Jupiler, Duvel, Piraat....thinking 2 of each.

I now have 6 bottles of 10.5% piraat to assault my liver with, the Jupi wasn't the 'light' 6% stuff but was the 8.3% tauro, and my poor old man gave himself a ferocious hangover by downing the bottles of Duvel they brought back without checking the ABV first.

I am trying to work out whether my family actually like me....

Het personeel van Deense bierbrouwer Carlsberg heeft het werk sinds woensdagmiddag neergelegd, omdat de directie heeft besloten dat onder werktijd geen bier meer mag worden gedronken.

this article in Dutch here states that Carlsberg personnel are on strike, because management decided they are not allowed to drink beer during work hours anymore. They used to have small refrigerators filled with bottles of beer, at their disposal throughout the day, and now that has been taken away from them. Now, they are only allowed to drink a beer during lunch hours.

Well, they took down the factory! 800 people went on strike the first day.

I had this beer while in Birmingham, and enjoyed a few others over lunch. OK, but not Belgian.

And this is what I just bought in Brussels, after enjoying an excellent day at Paris-Roubaix, to take home with me tomorrow.

So, last Thursday the wife and I toured the Brewery Bosteels which is where Kwak, Tripel Karmiliet and Deus is brewed. A tasting followed (outstanding).

Today, we have just arrived at the St Bernardus brewery where we are staying at the bed and breakfast next door. They brew Apt 12 here among other things.

The refrigerator here is stocked with as much beer as you can drink. They clearly didn't charge us enough...

Life does not suck much right now.

Oooh, Maredsous is a big favourite of mine!

If you can find the 10" (Tripel) on tap (i.e. here in Belgium - not sure you'd find it on tap anywhere else), do try it. It's even better than the bottled version.

Living in Belgium, I get to try out a few beers now and then. Lately I've loved Rochefort 10" (lovely stench of ripe cheese), Chimay Bleue and Sint Bernardus 12: coming on strong with the Brunes at the moment.

Had a Sint Bernardus 12 at the Three Days of De Panne the other week. Gotta say: there's nothing like it at 10am when the sun's out and the peloton's on TV and heading your way!

Honourable mention for the award-winning St Feuillien Brune on tap (so far I've only found that at Coup-de-Coeur on Avenue Georges Henri in Bruxelles). Bottled version fairly easy to come by but no way as good as "van 't vat"!

Feuillien was a legendary Irish priest whose stellar clerical career was cruelly cut short by the Belgian locals who - not being keen on him - chopped his head off.

Cheating a bit finally because this isn't an orthodox beer, but for those of you who like your beverages a bit funky (one reviewer on Ratebeer described this as having notes of "farmyards and cat pee" and I totally concur: it's irresistable), I invite you to discover Cantillon Gueuze.

If you're in Bruxelles, you can visit the brewery itself and test everything out (in November you can actually participate in the brewing process).

1)Have you ever committed crimes against the Reinheitsgebot?
2)Have you ever withheld custody of a Belgian beer from a Belgian citizen
3)Have you ever been arrested or convicted for an offense or crime involving the provocation of a beer induced hangover?
4)Do you have a predilection for awesome beers, or are you a beerophile.

Any ideas on where you'd like to retire?

Hijacking Scott's window of reply, sorry. Belgium is a great country, contrary to what people like Nigel Farage say (yes, I know he meant it differently). So when you have beer, cycling and chocolate (to name but a few clichés) and such beautiful countryside...

However, I will never get used to the weather here. California it ain't

I visited the Cantillon brewery and tasted a couple of their brews last week. Unfortunately I would have to agree with the RateBeer reviewer. I was not impressed!

Yeah, I don't blame you, it's not everyone's thing! But you know what? The words "farmyard" and "cat pee" were actually being used in a positive review!

As for gueuze generally, I love the stuff myself. It can be a bit vinegary for some folks - I gave someone a bottle for Christmas and they poured it down the sink thinking it was off.

Great to hear you went down to Cantillon anyway to give it a go. It's a bit rough down that end of town but it's fun when they're actually brewing.

I went around a drankenhandel (a beer store) in Oostakker last December picking out 'custom' crates of beer as Xmas gifts. I filled three crates of 24 bottles each (that's 72 bottles, maths fans!) with lots of off-piste unusualness and it cost me less than €130.

Dranken Geers was the place, just north of Gent. It differs from most drankenhandels in that, in addition to the usual trade business, it also has a consumer-friendly, supermarket layout for the premium ales: proper shelved displays rather than stacked crates. No ultra-rare stuff but plenty of harder-to-find breweries (at least they are round my way) like Ellezelloise and Struise.

By any chance are you trying to find a way to get Belgian citizenship or to get your employer to permanently transfer you to Belgium? Sounds like you are in heaven.
