What level a rider would have needed to prevail Froome of the 2013 Tour pattern?

What level a rider would have needed to prevail Froome of the 2013 Tour pattern?

  • Possibly no one of them. Froome's Tour level is completely irreal.

I don't know. Froome had a few weaknesses but I don't find them weak moments of physical aspect so it is the last point. Having a look at the rest options I consider only Basso a real deal.

Depends a lot on the rider. Most riders would have needed to be at the best level of their career to beat him. And even then, there are only a few riders who's best level would have been good enough to beat him.
Contador-2009 Tour, 2011 Giro level
Schleck-2010 Tour level
Nibali 2013 Giro would be close, even closer if the parcours were different.
Basso-2006 robo basso
Evans-probably 2011 Tour level, but this one's a maybe. Not sure he would be good enough to beat Froome.

Also, in the poll you put Pantani in? Froomes good, but he's no Pantani yet. This wouldn't happen to be a thread designed to gloat about Froome, would it? ;)

There are too many clinic issues with this thread - all of the options are obvious dopers (all have been caught).

Airstream trolling the clinic from a safe distance again.

Im gonna go with Riis in Hautacam form as the biggest challenge to Froome.

I suppose what Froome showed this season illustrates that he would have been able to do a monstrous kamikaze solo raid (Les Deux Alpes 98 / Galibier 11 / Fuente de 12) more than explicitly, doesn't it?

Sceptic and gustienordic,

LOL, I don't know guys which cycling matters you'd offer to polemize on without special references.

Perhaps, but not for sure until he actually does such raid.

Pantani could never time trial at Froome's level and as for the climbing well that was off the planet for the obvious reasons. It's impossible to compare them rationally for the reasons we know of all too well. I think it's a bizarre question.

The main issue is that this belongs in the clinic - anything we say can potentially be banned for. But I will say this: Froome does not have the panache yet that these other guys do. He rides for 20 minutes of intense effort and thats about it. Once he shows himself capable of doing an insane attack from far out, he will be a different class of rider. But I think with his TT ability he could beat Pantani (depending on the course) even if Pantani crushed him in the mountains.

LA - better climber, better TT'er
AC - about equal climber, better tactician/more guts
IB - better tactician
Pantani - better climber, worse TT'er

I don't think Nibali, i even figure Rodriguez a better climber (Nibali is a better alrounder though).

A good Quintana is just as good as Froome in the mountains, so let's hope for a Tour without a long flat TT (even though i think every GT must have a long ''flat tt'')

This has only one solution to check it out. One needs to put Froome in deadlock all or nothing situation. Very easy task, isn't it? ;)
