Horner has caved a bit too easily here. He ain't Marcus Aurelius, but he is defending champion at the Vuelta. How long did the guy scream that the MPCC rules are full of brown stuff before he became polite again?

As far as I'm aware the UCI has to abide by the Wada anti-doping code and under those rules Horner would be allowed to race.

WADA rules allow UCI to set even more strict standards, if they want. But they have to want, and right now they don't want to fully follow the example being set by the MPCC.

Poor Chris.

The guy knew better than anyone how to beat the system, then gets pinged on an MPCC rule. I guess Popovych take Horner's role as super-Teflon now.

Perspective here people: Horner is not the first rider who has had to sit out a Grand Tour in order for his team to stay within MPCC rules. Theo Bos missed last year's Vuelta, and the world still kept turning on its axis.

Yeah, but no-one cared then. Now we're robbed of Grandad vs. Alien. Might be time to revive that "battles we never saw" thread.

I just hope that Copeland has to pay back Horner's salary to the team! It was a stupid decision to sign him and this is payback!

Far from a medic, so please correct me, but why would you use cortisone to treat bronchitis? Wouldn't antibiotics make more sense?

It seemed pretty dangerous either way, if lowered cortisol levels are a predictable result from using cortisone, why even use it if you know it could result in not starting the Vuelta? Hardly seems worth the risk, he performed well in the Tour of Utah, certainly not bad enough to risk a treatment that could prohibit a Vuelta start.

Steroid to reduce the inflammation and edema.

Very few cases of bronchitis (less than 10%) are bacterial in origin, so antibiotics are mostly unnecessary.

a sad day for the sport :(

He should have raced for The Cleanest Team in the World (TM). He could have done the whole Vuelta on 40mg of steroids a day.

Why?
It's a very good decision, could have been better with a failed test!

I was looking forward to the battle between the two most freakisly doped riders of all time. now were stuck with Dawg and his bots.

another career over. I think this is the last we'll hear from Horner as he'll ride into oblivion. I don't think Lampre will extend his contract nor will a team offer him one. His body has been a chemistry experiment for quite some time and this is maybe the last straw. Maybe back in the US he may get a pro conti signing, but I think he's done.

YES!

Forever tainted.

Unless I misread the article he did nothing illegal and was volunteered to not participate by his team even though legally there would have been nothing wrong in doing so. But he had the tue and in any case he did not actually race on the drugs, even though he was allowed to.

This is like saying someone was found guilyy of robbery when a friend gave them
Permission to break into his house when he was away, in order to borrow some film he had, but they didn't do it anyway cos their parents said - don't do it.

If anything from a doping angle horners chances of getting caught at the vuelta, just fell. And lampres lack of support suggests any doping programme was individual.

So how come Lampre is giving him steroids while they are MPCC and know he will not be eligible if tested?
