Hi friends...

I'm a Juanjo Cobo's neighbour

I live 30km away from his house

I use to see both Cobo and Freire riding some days

Happy new year from Spain

Good for Movistar. Valverde returning and Cobo joining them is a double whammy for them. Last year they didn't have any top shelf GC rider. this time they can have a decent assault on the Tour and the Vuelta.

Why would Cobo ride the tour? Isn't his TT not very good? Considering how strong he was on the steep slopes of the Angliru, I would think the Giro to be perfect for him. Anyone else agree? Or is he not quite good enough to be able to compete with Basso and Nibali?

Very little TT in next years Giro.

have you ever looked at cobo?? the guy is 176 and 71 kg, he's not build as a climber at all and was always an itt rider, turned into a climber. he would be perfect for tour except he will have to help valverde.

You can probably count on one hand the number of time trials where he finished in the top-5 during his pro career.

you can also count the the top 5 places he;s had in mountainstages on one hand basically.

Yeah come to think of it he does look a little nuggety (I did watch some of the Vuelta). But I thought that he won that over Froome and Wiggins because of his climbing rather than chrono? Anyway, it will make the TDF even better with he and Valverde adding another dimension to the GC picture. I would think that Cobo would be a better GC threat than Valverde at Le Tour. Maybe a stage win and top 20 overall for Valverde in his first season back, but a top 5 maybe afterwards in the Vuelta if he rides it.

he is an amazing climber yes but no natural climber. if anything he remind me of botero. still always the less steeper climbs will suit him the best and keep in mind he rode angliru against guys like froome, wiggins and poels with all due respect

Keep in mind that he rode the last 6km of Angliru faster than Contador.

Really? Wow!

true but overall alberto was still faster by 45 seconds.mainly because sagan had to go extremely slow in order to not drop his leader nibali at the beginning of the climb

I believe his time was slower than contador right?

over the entire climb yes, it was sagan setting the pace for an out of shape nibali this year during the first part of the climb in 2008 it was bottle for contador and purito for valverde setting the pace for the first part of the climb, which imo is the reason why cobo was faster then contador on the second part but still slower overall

As of January 2011, Xavier Tondó was clearly a higher calibre GC rider than Juan José Cobo.
