I'm going to stick my neck out and say Katusha because I think it's plausible and noone else is mentioning them.

That's because they're not in the running anymore.

Sky = Money + Good Domestiques - Doesn't really know anybody there well ( I think )

BMC = Money + Good Domestiques + Few Good Friends

Astana = MOney + Great Domestiques + Vino + Undisputable Ardennes classics Leader

Between BMC or Astana. The Pay might decide.

If pay is a major factor, and I imagine it is (nothing wrong with that), then I'd stay well clear of Astana. They haven't got the best track record financially. They've been in trouble a few times before.

And will they stick around for the three years Phil is looking for? Or will they disappear once Vino retires? And who is actually paying the bills?

At least with BMC or Sky you know exactly where you stand. You know who is in charge, you know who owns the team (in both cases they're sponsor owned) and you know they're going to pay up regardless. That's what you want if you're looking for financial stability.

a fair point but it seems outdated. we haven't heard about the delayed/late payment troubles for well over a year. in fact, since the new state sponsorship was introduced, they've signed several big names who haven't had a negative peep.

according to the head of the kazakhstan velo fed - the name escapes me - (who is also the minister for sports) the astana project is very long term.

see above. the same fella boasted to a local interviewer just yesterday, 'i'll let you in on a secret,
next year we'll feature a rider from the top 5 world rankings'.............

if you check the uci rosters for 2010-11, you'll see that gilbert fits nicely ;)

Gilbert didn't gift WC 2009 to Cuddles lol. And he won't. If Gilbert has the legs he'll always go for the win. It's in his nature, and it's against his nature to give gifts. Working for someone doesn't mean gifting something away. He would work for Cuddles in GTs and perhaps stage races, but no way should Cuddles ever expect a gift from him. Will never happen.

Neither has to gift anything. Lombardy seems a better example where they worked together to ensure one of them won.

Agree overall with your conclusion, but do you think the Astana team would offer better support in classics than BMC? Thinking back over this year I seem to remember BMC being around and about more often.

Het Nieuwsblad is reporting that Astana are out of the running for Gilbert's signature. BMCs Ahoy I'd say then.
Strange, De Morgen is saying the opposite...

Also, it says Gilbert will announce august 1st where he's headed. Sounds a little cheesy, and LeBron James-ish for me.
If he had said "after the tour", would that have made a difference to you?

I will go with Bruyneel taking control of a belgian team with Trek ( omega pharma or lotto ) and forming it around Gilbert/ other riders. Bold prediction. Greenedge as well would have the financial clout to attract him. BMC, Astana and QS favourites probably. They would each have motivation as well. However it would be dog to drop Boonen from QS and replace him with another classics rider. I just do not see that happening unless if Boonen leaves soon he shall not go to QS.

He might not go to BMC as GVA left to be a leader.
He's not going to astana

Well, CN have posted what Het Nieuwsblad have said..... So it must be true ;)

And as for your question, well, yes, it would've made a difference. If he says 'after the Tour' it caries the implication that despite this difficult decision about his future Gilbert has to make, he remains focused on the Tour, and winning lots of stages there. Saying august 1st is like they're already hyping up the press conference where Gilbert will hog the limelight for a few hours.

Is Gilbert treating this like some sort of Belgian version of The Apprentice, getting rid of a team every week?

"Astana, you failed to come up with a three year deal, and for that reason, You're Fired"

Maybe but who cares the bloke has the right I recon, who else on the world tour who have that sort of pull.

There's no way Sky can afford both Gilbert and Cavendish, is there? Or perhaps they can, if they sell EBH out of his contract, because he will definitely not have much freedom in a team with both Cav and Gilbert.

Cavendish, Cancellara and, September's ruling aside, Bertie.

I can't blame Gilbert or his agent, they want the best deal and the most publicity as possible but, without mentioning names, if one of the aforementioned had done something similar, there'd be all sorts of comments about them being up their own backside.

the familys hang out etc etc but will Gerrans be at Sky next year?

Who knows. I was just pointing out that there was a connection.

As for Sky being able to afford him, presumably they've already put in a bid that Gilbert finds worthy of consideration.

Personally I can't see why Sky would want him, he's not British and he's not a future prospect and he'll demand top wages.

He wins races and is Belgian(close enough to the UK). And his English is decent(as is his Dutch, French and Italian for that matter)

Why would they want a future prospect when Gilbert will be in top shape for the next 3 years to come.

I find it strange Omega Pharma isn't considering a fusion with Quickstep. Like back in the Quickstep-Davitamon days.
