Marianne Vos is doing a Merckx as we speak. She's just unstoppable.

That said I believe contador is a legend. At least in the top ten best ever. Mental strength and will seem to be his greatest assets

And when women's cycling becomes more competitive you won't see that level of domination.

Contador's reputation is inflated over an objective measure by his fanatic fans.
They're building his personality cult in a manner of the officers of a totalitarian regime.

Did you know he rode Bola del Mundo on 53x11 at the age of 9?
... Uphill, off course.

Why? does he have such a fanatic fanbase, you could ask yourself. Maybe because he's.... a little bit special?

And we will never spread lies about him :) he only started cycling at the age of 15.

Nah... The fanaticism speaks about the fans, not about Contador.

Are you saying he learned how to ride a bike only at the age of 15?!
That certainly doesn't qualify him among the greats.

But why are we such fanatics? Other riders haven't got such fanatical fans... what is so different about Contador?

There is no true definition of "the greats" in my opinion...
It is an individual and biased placement everytime..

Funny thing is. That the more people tend to agree (like in here) on the matter. thus the sticker is warranted...

At first, I actually didn't like him, or his appearance. Until he proved me wrong by displaying his qualities not limited to riding up a mountain real fast...

All in my biased opinion of course...

Because of some mutual personal disposition you, Contador's fans, are sharing.
Maybe the disposition is exactly Contador.
Certain circles would find this remark rather witty.

But he rode Bola del Mundo on 53x11, steel frame, flat tires, etc. at the age of 9, anyway.

Atop of Bola del Mundo, he got visions from the cycling gods. There was but one message he was given, and ever since, Alberto Contador has followed this message:

Second place is not good

His success. Often people support who is winning (and attacking and being impressive) when they first join the sport. People joining the sport in 2007, 2009, 2010 or during the other 2 gts in 2008, would have fallen likely for Contador. Conversely the ones who joined pre 05 may have liked Lance and continued liking Lance through 09 then see COntador as the enemy and for that reason may continue to carry grudges for Contador and he has his haters too. Or those who joined in 10 and liked Schleck more- Contador enemy, still feel it.

Of course those are generalizations and only apply to some.

But more importantly his controversies have played a big role in hardening people one way or the other. Rasmussen pull out 07. Armstorng fight 09. Chaingate 10. Clenbuterol ban or lack thereof- 2011. (early) return 2012. These all were divisive issues. Anyone who merely liked or disliked Contador before any one of those may have ended up feeling far stronger about it when those things hit and became controversies.

I started following cycling in 2004 and became a huge Lance fan. After he retired, I was still following cycling but had no real allegiance to/was a fan of anyone. Then I had the good fortune to watch the 2007 Paris Nice. I became an INSTANT fan and have been ever since.
