One superfast lap and then more or less peloton completely stopping and just cruising for a long time doesnt necessarily make a great base for an attritional race. 2-3 rounds more or breakaway fight would've made it much, much harder.

This is also a new world for many riders. They no longer ride 6h30 races like riders in early 00's or late 90's.
