The Vatican guy should go ahead and perform the miracle of unglue the protesters hands.

Moses 2.0.

And yet Rick's point stands, WT cycling's carbon footprint is probably quite bad. No point shifting the goalposts to optics or whatever, IMHO. Most activities we love have contradictory effects in the current institutional setups, after all. And no, this is not saying that the protesters tactics are, erm, very good.

Also, as the Punch was invoked, Chuck D* put it best: Hinault was a hero to most / But he never meant sith to me.

* Quote may have been doctored
All life has footprint, but life is still worth living.

You don’t transform the global production of energy (which is what is needed) by focusing on activities that use energy.

The carbon footprint of the race convoy itself might be bad, but I remember Wiggins tour win inspired millions of people here to go out on their bikes. It will be the same for other countries too, the environmental impact of these races is a massive net positive.

It’s about the worst possible way to protest, because whatever the message they are trying to spread, it won’t be on tv, and people will even turn themselves against the message, because the protestors are getting exactly the opposite of what they want.
Anyways, it’s a perfect break for lunch! 😀

But they get plenty for their social media.

Maybe, but the optics are what they are. And considering Scottish road traffic is just normally going about its daily business then we're left with oil protestors protesting bikes whilst cars, trucks & whatever trundle around as per usual. It looks comical.

And this is starting to have an actual impact on this WC the longer it goes on. The whole point is it's a 270km endurance slog without a break.
Surprised you are so angry about this man. Its just a little protest innit. Doesn't matter really.

And it's pony too.

I'd like someone to actually explain why protesting oil at sporting events in 2023 even matters, or makes any difference, or is a "worthy cause".

Go to parliament & protest, or protest outside refineries & oil depots. Go into politics & actually make a tangible difference (which also deals with realistic facts of life regarding how people live). What's happening with stop oil protestors is merely a form of intellectual masturbation where a small group of agitators impose their behavior issues on others.

But that's as "political" as I'm willing to get here because the irony is of course I don't even disagree with the concept of a world without fossil fuels. I just know what these groups are & they're so vacuous to the point of representing the worst traits of self-indulgent 'eco warrior' tendencies where their activities harm their messaging.
