Men's road race team is just an assortment of dudes, love it. No leader, no plan, just vibes
When you don’t have a viable top 5 favourite the EF Tour de France chuck everything at the wall and see what sticks approach is actually quite sensible. No point asking any of these riders to sacrifice for the others. Just try to be present in every move and stay ahead of the big favourites for as long as possible to snag a result.

No I completely agree, no Italian rider is good enough to be a leader, you just have to go for it and try something different. It's not intended as a slight on Bennati, it's the best approach.

Interesting—I used to think Italy was one the teams that went into World’s with united approach and clear goals. But maybe that was just ‘cause Nibali?

If there's one thing Italy has done well for the past 10+ years is working as a team.
There was never a leader capable of winning at this level (and when there was, he crashed or had just cracked a vertebrae).

I think this gives a lot of nice possibilities for Italy. Attack from the start, always attack in two’s and don’t wait for the big favourites to do anything. If you get the right people along with you, you might get far.

What a joke , take useless guys like frigo and bagioli but will not send Fausto masnada who is actually a big rider with versatile high qualities
I mean, Frigo was good at the Vuelta, working for teammates who turned out to be weaker than him in breakaways.
But yeah, bringing Bagioli and sending De Pretto to the U23 race is a bit random, I guess they think the chance of him getting a medal there is clearly higher.

In the last decade the cracks where already showing, with a small number of possible leaders and thus bettere unity. Back when italy where the top nation, collaboration was on and off, you had some masterpiece of tactics like Varese 2008 but also some BS like Lisbona 2001.

Nah, it's politics making the right teams with the right staff members happy.
Yeah but why Realini if you want to make Trek happy? At least choose ELB
EDIT: Oh ok ELB is already in the team, nevermind

Elite RR, the road would settle the leadership issue: Roglic vs Pogi; Pidcock vs Yates bros, Castrillo-CRod-Juan-Adria vs. Aranburo-Landa-Mas-Bilbao
