Tbf I'd argue not riding gives him a better chance of a medal as he's going backwards as soon as Pog attacks. Might as well try to save as much energy and let Pog pull you along until he goes.
Pog deliberately waited for Sivakov. If he doesn't work, then Pog will drop him easily. The longer he stays with Pog the better chance he has of a better result.

In today's cycling, it seems like everyone is still intimidated by the stars and has forgotten the power of the group. No one cooperates anymore. I remember the years when Cancellara would lose the cobbled classics, even though he was clearly the strongest, because the others cooperated against him.
The power difference is greater today.

Evenepoel chasing Pogacar with his team mates is the best scenario to prevent a Slovenian victory. Creating new chase groups like we see now isn't the way.

Is it, though? The G2 dicking-around stuff is predictable. Pog can ride at a high rhythm for, near as I can tell, forever.
Normally yes. Eventually there will be some group that can cooperate. And 100 km solo for Pog sounds like a lot even for him.

But maybe I'm underestimating this:

Which is very true. Can't remember group 2 dynamics being as bad as they've been in the last few years when I started watching cycling in the late 00s.

Did you guys catch the difference in Pog's attack and Remoc's Mathieu's attack? Let me break it down for you: Pog attacks and there was nothing anyone could do. Remco Mathieu attacks, and there was something they could do.

I think VdP is still looking strong enough that if Mollema commits that this could be interesting still.

after the ramp pogi has managed to dwindle the chase significantly. Lots of bodies dropping out the back. Don’t know if Pogi can do this the entire race, but this pace is torrid

Mathieu and Remco need to whittle this group down, ideally they have only Jorgenson and maybe Hirschi with them. Then this is very much doable imo.
