Aru being confirmed for the Italian team is a bit annoying, I'd select him as a reserve and bring both Brambilla and Cataldo, one as an attacker and the other one as a workhorse if you need to set a high tempo on the Igls climb. Visconti instead of Brambilla would also be ok.
It's just a bit annoying that Aru gets a spot without even earning it, he even skipped the NC with the excuse of being sick or something like that.
On the other hand you have someone like Gasparotto who wasn't selected in 2013 or 2014, when he deserved it and was one of the few Italian riders who was able to get a good result in a hilly 250km one day race and in 2014 Ulissi wasn't even allowed to race, so not bringing Gaspa was a bit of a joke.

I think on that course Aru has to be included. He could be useful.
Aru was second last yesterday
He probably didn't even try to fight, at least try to ride like Nibali that with 65+ kms to go was already dropped by Androni pace but somewhat managed to return to the head on the race on the flat and even tried to attack in the finale and show that you have a bit of good will to do something.

who cares if he was second last or fifty-second last as for all intents and purposes he finished pretty much in the same group as 19th place

but, indeed he really should have made the main break
It's the attitude, when he saw that he wasn't able to follow he likely didn't give a f**k, and that's the problem considering that after the horrible Giro he was still saying that he wanted to lead the team in Innsbruck. If in Innsbruck he'll see that he can't do anything and then jump off the bike it's a wasted spot.

there weren't much crap weather hilly stages in the giro this year

and i think you are underestimating the positioning stress in a TDF peloton vs a Giro/vuelta peloton.
Even Kruijswijk said it's much easier to move in Vuelta/Giro compared to tdf

UCI with another video coverage stuff-up. "Plane is broken, so no pictures from the course as yet". Q: Who can forget last year's men's RR? A: We all can, because didn't see the final 5km.

Does Rivera even provide any slipstream to van Dijk?
No :p , but I suppose they placed her behind Rivera for a reason ;) everyone else can stay in her slipstream, and she's the strongest by far so she doesn't mind spending extra time in the wind
We had a Rivera-sized girl in our club for a few years. She also had a really low, pro, position on her bike. She was fast, but absolute rubbish to draft behind. We'd "fight" to not be in that position in a the pace-line. It became a bit of a joke. She moved to Switzerland and now posts pictures of the ridiculously good riding she gets to do.

Surprise with Sunweb.

Not really. It's a long course and even with shorter ones they always deliberately start slow.
My expectation is that Sunweb will smash the climb, but we will see.

Same awful coverage from the World Championships as always: Showing completely meaningless teams at intermediate times, not covering the big favorites BMC and Sunweb out on the road. Why can't ASO just take over the production? UCI are useless.

I love how the dropped riders are forming little grupettos

That was hilarious. Four riders from different teams riding their own little 'race'.

That climb really makes the race a lot more interesting. Also, man I'm so happy right now just to watch a WC in Austria. I was looking forward to this week for three years and now it has finally started :)
