....ok I will have to admit that while this comes from a source even lower on the evolutionary scale than Fox News and pond scum but it is a fact and I'm using it only to have a quote to leverage off....so don't you/we find it strange that there is a difference in responses to China and Iran given this fact...me, I'm so confused....

According to a Feb. 29, 2000, story – titled, "China Threatens U.S. with missile strike," by Bill Gertz of the Washington Times – "China stepped up its war of words over Taiwan yesterday, bluntly threatening to fire long-range nuclear missiles at the United States if it defends the island."

Despite this direct threat, Bush hasn't threatened to nuke Communist China – his good friend and trading partner. But, Bush has been making threats against Communist North Korea – and Iran – for years, demanding those two countries shut down any nuclear operations.

i have never watched fox that i know of. nor msnbc. although i have seen clips from them on the net.

i have watched cnn, though. i do not know if it is exemplary of american news, but if it is, god help you all. it is the biggest pile of crap that i have ever seen trying to pass itself of as news. i don't know how often they make mistakes, but it hardly matters when so little of what they do is report news. some of the news hosts do not seem to have any functioning brain cells and certainly do not understand what journalism and reporting are.

it makes me angry to even think about it.

If it makes you feel any better everytime I'm back in the US and tune into the mainstream media reports, I'm shocked and appalled by the baseness.

The cheese, dairy and wheat producers, the middlemen school-meal providers and schools on a tight budget all want pizza to be a vegetable. Sales are up, money changes hands, school boards save money (and who knows, they take a kick back from the company that provides the meals)... everyone happy and a fat bunch of kids.

What vegetable, if you eat it in copious amounts, would make you fat?

National Review? Red State? Wall Street Journal op-ed pages? Washington Times? PowerLine? Instapundit? Has Eric Erickson or Andrew Breitbart ever admitted to being wrong about anything?

To get perspective, I recommend to look at non UK/US sources. Link TV for instance has Al Jazeera (English) and others. Many foreign newspapers and TV channels have English sections as well.

ETA: I talked to my 10 year old this morning about it, and his first reaction was a fit of laughter. Then I explained the idea that tomato paste is counted as the vegetable part in pizza. He laughed even more, saying that 'everyone knew, tomato is a fruit, not a vegetable'. I'm proud of my boy, he's clearly smarter than most members of congress.

That's just stunning. The condition that it's a vegetable if it is spread with tomato sauce is hilarious. What's wrong with the USDA recommendations? Excess cost? But Pizzas aren't exactly cheap snacks (not food, just very filling snacks).

Yes, declaring pizza to be a 'vegetable' would allow savings to be made all along the line, except in children's waist measurements.

Jokes aside though, how much of difference in price is there between a wholesome meal and a snack like a pizza. For example, the pizza proposal will never happen here simply because a very good meal is available for the equivalent of $1 and a proper pizza is around $5-6.

My avatar did once say that he became a journalist so that he wouldn't have to rely on the media to get his news, and I can't disagree with the idea.

Fast forward to the Bush years. I had been aware of the Evangelical movement back in the 80s but Creationism still wasn’t being taught in schools and Roe v. Wade hadn’t been overturned on religious grounds. But during Bush’s tenure, I started hearing the more than occasional remark about how not believing in God makes you a bad American and if you were a LIBERAL that didn’t believe in God? Scum of the Earth!

Wait a minute. Not believing in God (or, more precisely, not believing in a very specific version of God) makes me a bad American? How does that even work? This country was founded on religious freedom and the explicit separation of Church and State, wasn’t it? And that’s when I became acquainted with Republican Jesus™.

Who the hell is Republican Jesus™?

Republican Jesus™ is very different than the Jesus you and I are familiar with. First off, he is White. Not just white, but White. Republican Jesus™ has a special place in his heart for America. Specifically, White America. Do you doubt this? Ask yourself why anyone who believes in a colorblind Jesus would even conceive of praying for the death of Obama? No, only those who follow Republican Jesus™ would even think that such a prayer could, or should, be answered. If you are currently thinking that racism has nothing to do with the unprecedented hatred of Obama, go away, I’m talking to the grownups.

Republican Jesus™, by the way, is a big supporter of the Confederacy. Why he let them lose the War of Northern Aggression is a mystery. But all “real” Americans know that the South will rise again and Republican Jesus™ will lead the way back to glory. Or something like that. How the Northern and Mid-western Red states fit into this Southern revival is also a mystery.

Republican Jesus™ loves guns. Loves them! Never mind all that silly talk of beating swords into plowshares! Every good member of the church of Republican Jesus™ should have, at minimum, enough armament to hold off an invasion by those commie Nazi liberal hordes that are coming any day now. Or the ATF, whichever shows up first. Or maybe just enough to wipe out a schoolroom filled with kids when their excellent parenting skills manifest themselves in the next Columbine tragedy.
