Wayne Swan lack of intelligence shines again. Tries to call a discussion paper about compulsory voting as a "tactics of the Tea Party in the United States, trying to stop people from exercising their democratic rights". I want what he is smoking. Somehow voluntary voting according to him is undemocratic. Unbelievable how stupid he is.

acf I thought you supported compulsory voting?

Obviously you would put it better than Swanny...

Perth generally has it the worst. You guys have 40oC temperatures quite regularly, I almost feel sorry for you. I have often wanted to holiday in Perth during the summer holidays although the heat does turn me off a bit. Melbourne is going to be quite nice over the coming week, excluding Friday. Should be good for the Nationals in Ballarat.

BroDeal will not want to trade positions with you Ferminal because January in Australia is spider time.

I do support compulsory voting but Swan's comments were plain absurd and nonsensical.

Speaking of the weather, it's currently insane in Sydney at the moment. 43 degrees don't do it justice- the best way I can describe what it really feels like would be a scenario in which it's a hot day, you've parked your car in the sun for a few hours, you get inside and don't roll down the windows or turn on the aircon. It's just brutal!

Movingtarget, if you ever have a silly leftie use the Abbott-misogyny claims against him, just remember to use some of Julia Gillard's positions when President of the Australian Union of Students.

I don't need convincing, it might be childish but every time I hear her voice I turn the volume to zero. If she gets re-elected I may have to immigrate. My loathing has no limit.

It's the same down here in Wollongong, no sea breeze today. Brutal is right. Thankfully we only get if for one day. In central Australia they have had a week at 47 degrees !

I feel the same way. She annoys the crap out of me. I would prefer a *** like Keating as PM than this woman.

To cheer up the mood and for some entertainment, take a look at this amusing video of Bob Katter... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4e8qkBt5JQ :D

ALP ministers now criticising Abbott because he is a volunteer firefighter. I guess Gillard sitting on her fat **** eating Tim Tams is better.

EDIT: The coward ministers now deleted their tweets.

Here's a comparison of the two leaders...

ACF, I understand you're a right-winger, but I'm not having links to communism, 'stopping the boats' and religious/family choices as reasons to bash Julia/promote Abbott.

I consider myself a leftist, but keep your pants on, I'm no fan of Labor either. Two-party systems where they're both equally bad is so deflating :(

Some of those arguments used are horrific. How is advocating twinning Melbourne with Leningrad relevant at all? I didn't know twinned cities did anything at all except promote tourism to each other. Dallas could twin itself with Beijing and nobody would suddenly start thinking that Texas is going to be overrun with communists posing as cultural attaches.

Links to communism and her failure on immigration are areas she should be taunted about.

She wanted to have an official alliance with communist Russia through connecting Leningrad and abandoning the ANZUS treaty? That is just great

Holy **** Abbott has an economics degree? Can only think he got it in the 18th Century...

Yes, he does. Something Julia, Wayne and Joe Hockey don't have. Thank god we have Tony as Opposition leader because Turncoat (aka Turnbull) would have let us have one and we would have had many more years of Labor than we are going to have if Turncoat was still leader.

Vaclav Klaus' term as President is finally over and the centre-right in the Czech republic has had a disastrous result. Shame he has gone considering I agree with his views on free-market economics, global warming and euroskepticism.

HEAD'S UP!!!

I'm going to change the title of this thread to Global Politics. I'm going to change the title of the other thread to US Politics.

I've mentioned this before and didn't get much resistance or response, so if anyone has anything to say, do so now.

Changed the title of the thread. Please try to post accordingly as much as possible.

As before, any and all new political threads will be merged into this (or the US Politics) thread.

Free-market and euroskepticism are contradictory.

And I don't see any difference between EU and Anzus (only EU has a political side).

Conservativeness opposes Free-Market, obviously. That makes you a left-winger !

Conservatism does not oppose free market. Modern day conservatism or neoconservatives support free markets but also support the foundations of society and the traditions that have served society well over hundreds of years.

ANZUS is a war treaty, EU is a parliament for a particular region. Completely different so please come back to planet earth on that point. Euroscepticism and free markets are not contradictory. You can have free markets but not have a joined parliamentary body and joined currency, both of which have failed dismally. A European Union that has a few countries doling out money to multiple countries who are floundering is not what you would classify has laissez-faire/free market economics. It is largely supporters of the left that are pushing for the EU than those on the right. Euroscepticism is more a feature of right-wing politics, even if it traditionally isn't.

I am not a left winger because I believe that a social hierarchy and some level of social and economic injustice is natural to any prospering society and that people should have the opportunity to work themselves up to higher levels of economic success and not be spoon-fed by the state, something that a left winger supports.

Sorry, short of outliers like Cuba, which is a dictatorship anyway, which left-wing countries lack those elements again? Last time I checked, all social democracies of the left have social hierarchy, some level of social and economic injustice, and offer individuals the opportunity to work themselves up to higher levels of economic success, because all of them are free-market-based economies.
