The US has been backing Islamic freedom fighters in this area on and off for a 5 or 6 decades. All our intel on the region said that the growing..growing poppy/hash problem would be hard to overcome. Now we are not going to use weed killer because that runs the displaced farmer into the arms or the Taliban or fortifies the position of the local warlord. These guys handed a modern army a defeat right in front of our eyes. The area has never been stable. Poppies= profit. But if anybody knows how to pay farmers not to grow things,we do. When Luke oil signed the deal with the US installed Iraqi government that had to hurt Bush's feelings.The thing I hate most about this..Paris-Dakar reroute. So true regarding the US paying it's growers to NOT grow anything. Big mistake to go down that path here, but I think it works over there.
