Cancellara is a peak beast, he usually has a peak at the cobbled classics and then a lesser peak at the Tour, to reach his big peak again at the Worlds. Everywhere else he's kinda mediocre compared to his April form.
True, but I'm really disappointed by the way he has raced this year, since the cobbled classics he has barely even tried to win a road race. He has barely been in a breakaway at all and almost never attacks in the finale anymore (except from tdf stage 1 I think). Hopefully he can do something at worlds though.

There's an 11 man shortlist quoted in a CN article.

Aus team for M W and Junior... U23 not announced today (blame Hepburn?)

Men:

Jack BOBRIDGE (Evaston Park SA, 13.07.1989 / Garmin Cervelo) TT
Simon CLARKE (Selby, VIC 18.07.1986 / Astana) RR
Baden COOKE (Benalla, VIC 10.12.1978 / Saxo Bank) RR
Simon GERRANS (Jamieson, VIC 16.05.1980 / Team Sky) RR
Matthew GOSS (Cressy, TAS 05.11.1986 / HTC Highroad) RR
Heinrich HAUSSLER (Inverell, NSW 25.02.1984 / Garmin Cervelo) RR
Mathew HAYMAN (Araluen, NSW 20.04.1978 / Team Sky) RR
Stuart O'GRADY OAM (Unley Park, SA 06.08.1973 / Leopard Trek) RR
Richie PORTE (Hadspen, TAS 30.01.1985 / Saxo Bank) TT
Michael ROGERS (Garren, ACT 20.12.1979 / Team Sky) RR
Chris SUTTON (Sylvania, NSW 10.09.1984 / Team Sky) RR

Adam HANSEN (Edmonton, QLD 11.05.1981 / Omega Pharma Lotto) RR reserve
Mark RENSHAW (Bathurst, NSW 22.10.1982 / HTC Highroad) RR reserve

Interesting that they are picking Rogers who will only have had a dozen or so race days before the start. Also a little surprised at Bobridge instead of Meyer for the 2nd TT spot.

Haussler was in no form at all this Vuelta, I wouldn't have picked him. Rogers either, who cares what he did in GP Plouay, he's not fit enough. Would have liked to have seen Hansen in there and Renshaw is a big loss I think.

Possible Roles:

Simon CLARKE - Breakaway
Baden COOKE - Domestique/Pull back breaks
Simon GERRANS - Breakaway/Late Attacks
Matthew GOSS - Designated Sprinter
Heinrich HAUSSLER - 3rd Sprinter
Mathew HAYMAN - Domestique/Pull back breaks
Stuart O'GRADY - Road Captain
Michael ROGERS - Domestique/Pull back breaks
Chris SUTTON - 2nd Sprinter

its a sprinters race and we leave out the best lead out man in the world

why would they pick Rogers over Renshaw ????
Matt White said last night on SBS said that Rogers was included in the shortlist because he rode a good race in Plouay which is at a long distance like the Worlds.

Renshaw's recent seasons in classics:

2011:

GP Plouay +1'53"
Cyclassics +4'31"

2010:

Scheldeprijs +0"

2009:

Cyclassics DNF
GP de Danain +0"
Scheldeprijs +11"
G-W +11'35"

I think he's made the final group at M-SR once in his career.

So how did Porte get a gig over Meyer then?
Because Porte is a better time triallist?

Even so, those races are generally on pave or a quite hilly. This is pretty much a flat circuit. Choosing Rogers is a big mistake. The guy has no form what so ever and is coming off a virus.

My team would of been:
Goss (main sprinter and leader)
Hansen (workhorse)
Hayman (workhorse),
O'Grady (workhorse but could also go with moves in the finale)
Clarke (attacking rider)
Sutton (leadout/secondary sprinter)
Renshaw (leadout/secondary sprinter)
Sutherland (workhorse)
Gerrans (attacking rider)

I think the selectors almost got it right, just swap Hansen for Rogers. Anyway, Cooke, O'Grady, Hayman and Rogers/Hansen is more than enough of an engine room and Clarke and Gerrans can fill this role too in a pinch.

I suspect that the race may be too selective for Renshaw and Sutton from the way that the Italians and Belgians are talking after their recons of the course...

yep i definatly recon renshaw should have been in, and i also dont understand how gossy has such a strong leadership claim after a fairly quiet month since he had to quit the vuelta, i was thinking this morning renshaw could potentially have ended up being the protected rider. sucks that the aussies have such a strong team but are lacking a big sprinter, the oppossite problem to the brits with cav but not enough support to control the race and lead out the sprint

Of course he was chosen on merit.

Equally Renshaw was not relegated (although he has a track record;)) because he ran the orange instead of waiting for green but rather because the selectors chose the whole team on merit & structure.

That said I agree Renshaw should be there on merit if not for Rogers then someone else (but that's when it gets difficult) - he did a Champs Elysee style 1-2 with Cav at the ToB overnight. I also agree Rogers is very risky.

Copenhagen course is much more Plouay than Scheldeprijs. This year there was a group of 80 at the finish, Renshaw wasn't one of them.

I would have had Hansen instead of Rogers.

Renshaw actaully won on the course in the Tour of Denmark if my memory is correct?

That was Hayden Roulston, from a solo break, Renshaw finished in the front group
