Worlds Sankt-Wendel 2011 (January 29 and 30)

Page 3 - Get up to date with the latest news, scores & standings from the Cycling News Community.
One of the most entertaining Worlds I've seen since Hooglede. ;)

Clear hierarchy, contrasting with the U23 race.
Pauwels was not in his best form but deserved his 3rd place. :)

I'm not that happy because Styby skipped Pont-Château to win this one. He proved to be right but it would have been better for the sport if he did it.

Apparently he will still cross for 2 years. What did Lefevere say about Devenyns and the Pyrenées?

NOS broadcast the Ladies race instead of the Aus' Open. LOL !

Who really cares about that, except the Belgians?

Of course they do. The ratings for tennis aren't very high in Holland, they're worse for cyclocross of course, but when a Dutchwoman is a big favourite to become world champ...

Good win for Stybar and chuffed for him

The downsides

Very uninspiring course, almost a boring course, clearly designed for the fans there not the tv

The coverage was abysmal, the producers were flicking from leaders to empty track, to random cyclists left right and centre

The dude with the banner on two poles who spent the entire race trying to get his banner on tv.. watch the bloody race instead of trying to get on camera. Its like people who go to concerts and spend the entire gig taking photos and not actually listening/watching.

'Duivenlokaal De Luchtklievers'

At least that was priceless.

Love the Belgian reactions such as "bad for the sport" and "stupid stybar"

Never forgotten how Belgian cyclocross "fans" misbehaved BADLY during the worlds in hoogerheide. Such a low attitude. Sure, they like foreigners trying cyclocross, until they start to win too much.

Those were not real fans, but it was a disgrace indeed :(
and about the stupid stybar, I just wanted Nys to win, if Pauwels had won I would've said stupid Pauwels :p

More misbehaving overnight by some Belgian fans today moving the course markings and pushing over the mobile toilets. Shame.

Anyhoo, I didn't think that todays race was so bad. The best two riders finished in gold and silver respectively. Had the climate been more accommodating and not been so cold I'm sure that the race would have been a better spectacle. That's not the fault of the riders or the organisers though. I don't think that we can legitimately beat them up too hard!

I'm really happy for Jonathan Page too. Great ride and he justified a season of working his *rse off rather than hoovering up UCI points in meaningless races in the States.

Every cyclocross lover. Hope it doesn't equal only Belgians.

I was rather happy with that, actually. I guess it will remain so, until Thiemo stops choking. :D

For sure, the Dutchies are and have always been righteous and correct like for example when Liboton got punched in the stomach while leading the Worlds race in 1984, on your waste dump of Oss.

Stybar is still insanely popular in Belgium and I can testify it. 2 posters on an Internet forum don't change much. And by the way, scepticism goes along every cycling performances nowadays. Check this out: http://www.nieuwsblad.be/article/detail.aspx?articleid=G7G35NB41

I agree with this. But even the weather wasn't bad for me. Those who didn't like it might stick to the ever more boring road racing !

On another note, has anybody also noticed that Vervecken had put on some weight since retiring? :D

The fact that I had to look up who this Thiemo is you're talking about, is testament to how big tennis is in Holland.

Haha, in 1984! You couldn't find fault with the current crop of Dutch cyclocross fans... because there aren't any :p

Forgetting about one's history is already a fault ! And being the "Youngest" is not an excuse. :p

Getting huffy for such irrelevant attitudes as booing or for innocent post on an Internet isn't bright either. Nobody cares about Boom being booed. There is worse in life.

My post-race thoughts ...

On Styby winning - It was a brilliant ride ... he was simply the strongest and didn't have a guarantee he would win. Nys gave him a good challenge and gave it everything. You could see how pleased he was with his ride.

On the course - I rode the course and I liked it ... technical ... VERY hard and it suited power riders. Hard to translate the harshness of the course on the TV. The ruts (when frozen) made it a very hard course to ride and caused a lot of flats in the early races.

The ride of the day for me was Johnathan Page. He was in the lead group and road so strong until a flat ... I then saw him make his way from a 30th position to the third group (going for 8th I think) ... that was a massive gap to close. The other surprise ride for me was Fontana (who had the second best mustache in the peloton after Spanish Champion Hermeda).

Best cheering section was the Swiss lot who were just before the pit ... they stayed there from before the women's race to the men's race and were crazy loud and fun.

My only complaint would be the length of the course could be a little longer as it was so short and fast that with the 80% rule it caused a lot of riders to be pulled early, but the length of the course and it's course also make it super easy to watch from the middle of the course.

Hermida's mustache was hilarious :D
Fontana wasn't that big of a surprise for me anymore, not the first time he did this (Treviso? some world cups?)

Expected more of the French riders though (although Mouray's comeback was impressive)

I didn't mean to say that the Dutch cyclocross fans are without fault, I meant to say that there simply aren't that many Dutch cyclocross fans ;) But I'm glad you could vent your frustration.
