I wanted to take Valv.Piti of the list, because I think he'll be spending too much energy at the Vuelta, trying to win the GC...

i was thinking that, but after his battle with vino in the vuelta 2006 he still got a 3rd place in the worlds. This course might be a bit harder, but never count Bala out :)

I hope one or two of the vasc. boys get in the dutch team. Kroon, Gesink obviously will be there... weening probably deserves a spot too. Hoogerland maybe?

----

anywho... I think Gerrans has a shot, if he is there in the end he could do it. I'd love to friere win again, but I aint holding my breath.
Cunego is the man imo, if he has the right form there, watch out.
Valv. is always a factor. Gilbert could pull of it too. Andy schleck is still one of my favorites for the win. He was unbeatable at L-B-L.
Finally i'd love to see vino win, but I ain't holding my breath.
PS: Wouldn't be awesome if spartacus doubled up.

What about the tt? A more hillier course doesn't gurantee a win for cancellara. Who will challenge him? Possibly leipheimer or evans or kloden?

The course's difficulty is the same as other years :)

I was told that it was a more difficult coursse with some tough steep sections. If you are right then i think the swiss have made a course which is going to be unbeatable for cancelllara.

Canc won at Beijing, I think he will win in front of his home crowd.

You have to think Cunego is the man to beat this year. Would like to see him win, but I would also like somebody to beat Italy's stranglehold on the WC. Of the realistic winners (so no Hammond or Swift etc) I would love to see Gilbert take it. Gutsy rider.

The dutch team will consist of (some of) the following riders:

Robert Gesink, Koos Moerenhout, Karsten Kroon (all guaranteed)

Lars Boom, Laurens ten Dam, Johnny Hoogerland, Sebastian Langeveld, Bram Tankink, Pieter Weening.(3 out of 6)

Totally agree with all names there.
Andy Schleck might have a (good) shot too...

Would home soil be considered an advantage or disadvantage?

I'm probably part of the minorty when it comes to the optional riders, but I would love to see Sebas go to the Worlds.. I have no idea how his current form is, but I just think he's one of those guys who would go for it.
Like Hoogerland is doing at the Vuelta at the moment. I wonder how that will develop...

I'd do cartwheels if Gilbert won. But with the Flandrians and Walloons working each to their side, I can't see it happening.

My wish will be the same as usual: I want a surprising rider to win, not one of the big favorites.

Dave Millar to finally get the win over cancellara..

Road, who knows, perm any one from thirty, im gonna tip either Baby Schleck (my likely winner), or Russ Downing to send shockwaves through the cycling world.. :D lol

i'd like to see boom, hoogerland, weening there. But I do like LTD, who would be a great domestique for the team.

I am rooting for Hoogerland, although he hasn't been confirmed yet...

If only he will refrain from attacking in the first or second lap!

Sanchez, Valverde, Cunego, and gilbert are going to be hard to beat. I'm not sure if gerrans will be able to match them in a sprint.

agreed they will be hard to beat in a sprint, but i think the aussie team will finally ride as a team this year and gerro will jump away on the last lap...and we know what he is capable of in a small group finish

Team Australia for 09 worlds
1.Evans
2.rogers
3.gerrans
4.O'Grady
5.Hansen
6.Lloyd
7.Lancaster
8.Sutton
9.???? Can't think of anybody

The amount of climbers that australia has proves that cadel can't go to an aussie pro team to have a go at the tour as we a full of sprinters.

9th rider could be mat hayman?super strong domestique

Andy Schleck must be one of the first favourites if the race is as hilly as it's said to be, but dropping out of the Vuelta in the first week must put him at a disadvantage to Cunego, in terms of training. I've watched more of the Vuelta this ear, and it's sort of funny to observe people training during the race, riding in ways that don't make much tactical sense. Cancellara, particularly, who I think will be interested in the RR, has been just towing small groups of riders up hills, seemingly just for the sake of it. Also Freire and O'Grady in the break on a stage with a mountain top finish, I couldn't explain that. Other names for the Worlds: Rodrigues? Kirchen? I can think of others but my knowledge of day racers is limited, I could be laughed of the forum. Could be a good year for non-Italians, Italy missing Di Luca and Rebellin. What Italian other than Cunego could do it? Scarponi? Could Ballan possibly even defend the jersey?

Evans would be a nice surprise, although he might not have a chance in the sprint. Are the Aussies definitely riding for Gerrans only? Hope there aren't any politics there.

Really surprised at the sprinters that made the German team...Geschke would have a much better chance of being helpful later in the race...am I missing something?

Ya, I was thinking the same thing. It seems like some riders are just there because of their name and not because of realistic expectations. Even Grabsch and Lang who are in the TT selection would have been better picks than some of hte sprinters.

The italian team has alot more thought behind it.
