Belgium. (Surprise), no Devolder (yet)... 8 out of 9.

* Philippe Gilbert
* Tom Boonen
* Francis De Greef
* Kevin De Weert
* Maxime Monfort
* Nick Nuyens
* Greg Van Avermaet
* Maarten Wynants

Last one will come from:
Dries Devenyns, Stijn Devolder, Bert De Waele, Serge Pauwels, Johan Vansummeren and Jurgen Van den Broeck.

Did Summie even race since the eneco tour?
I would never pick Devolder, he will probably feel he's at least even to Gilbert and won't help.

i was reading the list and i thought the belgiums would be better of bringing devolder , pauwels and vansummeren...............

i know they cant .......but i would leave boonen at home , and avermaet would not make my list either , not this course , not this year

Devolder in a reaction to not making the first 8 (and probably not going at all).

His reaction is exactly what I expected:

"Biggest humiliation in career"
"They're making themselves look ridiculous"
"Belgian cycling doesn't go much further than Boonen, Gilbert and me"
"Only Boonen has a bigger palmares"

Winning Flanders twice in a row is a fantastic achievement when you look how many great Classics riders have never won one (Hincapie being the most obvious), let alone two, but surely he can't dine off winning the RVV for the rest of the season, and actually perform in other big races.

From an egomaniac jackass like him, it's precisely what's to be expected.

I'm still laughing at him for this season.
In january he was saying his big goal was the Tour and he'd worked so much on his climbing to be ready. After the first mountain stage where he was nowhere to be seen, he was nonchalantly trying to convince the press that he hadn't prepared for it and the race was never a big goal for him.

A month later he was again telling the press he failed his big goal that was the Tour and he was ashamed of how badly he'd failed at it, bla bla.

You have to laugh at a guy like that :D

Also the Tour de Suisse last year comes to my mind. He attacks like a madman a few kms from the line but doesn't win because he went just a little bit too early. Then he has a smile on his face while telling the press that his DS had made him promise he'd only attack at a certain place, but he "was too anxious. couldn't wait. so attacked before that anyway".

Dumb as a brick :p

I don't want to talk Devolder's 2 wins in Vlaanderen down, but being in the same team as Boonen in that race is certainly a big advantage. Attack from a group with your teammate Boonen in it and everybody is scared to chase you down and bring Boonen back to the front. Hincapie could have won that way in that team.

Still, Vlaanderen twice in a row is amazing, but winning that way can only happen with one team.

I agree there!! Without Boonen there is no way he gets 2 in a row. He should thank Boonen for just being Boonen!!

Now, on to worlds...I don't have feelings for Devolder one way or the other...but I am surprised he is not on the team...what has Avermaet done lately? To be honest...I would think Devolder would fare better on this course than Boonen right? Anyway, sorry to see him upset about this.

I think Devolder should be on the team, but I think the way he's lashing out at the powers that be makes him look like a jerk. He might have had a good shot at the rainbow jersey.

The US team is missing everybody. I thought that at least DZ would show up for the ITT.

It would be nice to see Spartacus win on his home turf and beat the Italians. Other than that, I really don't have a favorite.

What's the profile of the climbs? The site only says that their average gradient is 10%, no maximum is given. There seem to be differences of opinion about the difficulty of the climbs.

10% will be too much for all the sprinters.

Boom and Hoogerland in the dutch sqaud. I would have picked them also. Pretty much satisified with the team. Would like to see the last spot go to weening (or maybe LTD)

Pity they don't have all 9, would have a really strong team. But this might work to their advantage. They can sit back and let the italians and spanish do the work.

Even if we get to start with 16 riders, those 2 countries will still have to do the work.
We should just act like the Italians usually do and buy the help of some smaller countries for the first 150-200km.

Aus World's Team, No Pete McDonald??

I was disapointed not to see Pete McDonald in the Aussie Worlds team. Instead, it seems selectors have put in sprinters that will have no chance of finishing on a very tough course.
The course looks to be a bit simialr to Ballarat (but much longer) where Pete won the Aus title earlier this year making the two HTC Columbia boys (Adam Hansen & Mick Rogers) look very silly in a 3-up sprint!
Pete would have been ideal support for the likes of Gerrans, Evans and Rogers. The fact that he isn't riding in the Pro Tour may have had something to do with his non selection?? Discuss
Goss also was left out which surprised me given the likes of Simon Clarke is in. Goss is our form Sprinter at the moment.

Hmmmm I seem to remember something earlier in the year - a race - just after he won the Aussie title, where he was invited but I think his team (Drapac Porsche) were not, so he went and raced elsewhere with his team.

I am in no way saying this has had any impact, but anyone in the know will tell you it's an old boy's club and it's who you know / who likes you not strictly speaking how good you are that determines selection.

He was invited to ride for UniSA in the Tour Down Under but declined the invitation and rode the Tour of Wellington instead, which he won.
