Well that excatly the thing - he made rogers and hansen look silly...not because he is better than them, but because one of them should have beaten him easily. If you look at riders like Sulzburger and Walker, who dominate locally, get big contacts in Europe, and then disappear for a couple of seasons, then you would understand the gulf that exists between local races and those in Europe.

In any case, I don't understand the who the "useless sprinters" are that you are talking about. Sure, general qustions marks exist around Hayman, riders like Davis and Clarke have proven that they can hack it tough course, and will probably be needed in the very unlikely event that there is a pack finish.

Quite frankly Davis has done squat since January to even be selected.

Leaving out Goss was just stupid. He can be Australia's sprinter if there was a bunch sprint (highly unlikely).

There is another bloke, Richie Porte. Look at his palmares this year. This bloke has had more success than some of the guys in this team and he isn't there?

Australia should have put their team around Gerrans. This would have been a much better team.

Evans
Gerrans
Lloyd
O'Grady
Rogers
Porte
Sulzberger
Renshaw
Goss

In: Porte, Renshaw, Goss
Out: Hayman, Clark, Davis

Either way, Porte and Goss should have been in the squad. Hansen has no chance for the time trial so he should have made the RR squad too. The selection of Davis is stupid. We should be rewarding the younger riders, other than the washed up ones.

Ridiculous squad.

Hmmmm I seem to remember something earlier in the year - a race - just after he won the Aussie title, where he was invited but I think his team (Drapac Porsche) were not, so he went and raced elsewhere with his team.

I am in no way saying this has had any impact, but anyone in the know will tell you it's an old boy's club and it's who you know / who likes you not strictly speaking how good you are that determines selection.
That wouldn't have any bearing on whether he got selected or not.

If Jono L. is who I think he is, he probably has a better idea than most of what it takes to get selected for elite rep teams in Australia.

As for Evans and Rogers not riding the TT, I presume they have been talking to the selectors for some time as to their form and plans; maybe they think that a) Australia has a good shot at a medal in the road race,b) they are not in medal-winning TT form (something a lot less susceptible to the vagaries of the day than a road race) and c) doing the TT is detrimental to the chance of road race success.

i remember rogers saying that he probably wont contend for the TT worlds again. i still cant figure out how we won it 3x and never showed a hint of that form in any grand tour TT

Buninyong Bunny, I'm not sure where you found the quote "useless sprinters" in my post? What I did say was that they have selected sprinters that would have no chance to finish on a very tough course. I'll be very happy to eat my words, but I seriously doubt I'll need to!

I liked Sasquatch's selections although I wouldn't bother with Mark Renshaw even given his terrific season. I'd have McDonald in. He'd be there helping out Gerrans, Evans or Rogers when they'll need it.

Australian Champion not at World's

A late starter to the racing game by way of the Sydney push-Bike-courier scene... Winning the national title should carry the honour of being an automatic pick.

Being at front all day on a hilly course.....Time trialling across to a 3 time world ITT champ and then out-foxing 2 seasoned pro's in a confusing finale.... he deserves to front up in the champ's jersey and represent

I hope Cycling Australia gave him the choice.... if not they're doing all they can to detract from the value of the Australian titles.

Racing is about the honour of winning the races that matter... not just being a bill-board for some brand of this or that in another country.

do the aussie titles matter?

It's impossible to justify Macdonald's inclusion in the team for the world's based on a title he won in January. What's he done over the last couple of months (and at what level) to display the form necessary to give the selectors confidence he should be in the team? Not enough I'd assume given his non-selection.

not impossible Tugbot

we have a national title race where we decide our National Champion everyone knows when it is on.

it's on in January to help out the pro's... but it's an open champs as are the worlds

A 9 month difference (an entire season basically) is more than enough justification not to pick a national champion for the worlds team. That they'll pick the best team on current form is the correct way to make selections if they want to achieve the best possible results.

Pete MacDonald deservedly earned the right to wear the jersey for an entire year but it isn't and never should be a free ride.

It doesn't help the pro's by having it in January. It does them a great disservice.

Whilst we're on form of McDonald, what about Davis? How can they justify his selection? He's done nothing the last few months.

???

2nd @ Paris-Bruxelles last Saturday.
2nd @ GP de la Wallonie last Wednesday.

OK, 2 races in the shadow of the Vuelta, but still; he showed decent form.
